Don't have a big data strategy yet? Good! - ZDNet

Don't have a big data strategy yet? Good! - ZDNet | Data progress | Scoop.it
Don't have a big data strategy yet? Good! ZDNet After six months to a year of dinking around and being disappointed with their "build big data and they will come" strategy, the business will stop funding things and IT will get another black eye.
MaverickInside's insight:
A refreshing rejection of IT led developments. In the modern enterprise, there is always room for business led initiatives that are well designed and that maintain a steady course. It will be interesting to see what the next "big data" will be... App-world, 3d money printers, crowd funding and eye-ware computing no doubt?

Capture, clean, integrate, maintain and reap the rewards? Familiar actions and similar outcomes (complexity overload) - how to break the cycle? I'd recommend a focus on the business vision, it's drivers, it's value chain and managing the customer network. Less Single Customer View more Single Network View...

Big Data's Dehumanizing Impact On Public Policy

Big Data's Dehumanizing Impact On Public Policy | Data progress | Scoop.it
Correlation-driven Big Data approaches to public policy issues try to de-humanize human decisions. That's always bad policy.
MaverickInside's insight:
Having recently interrogated Shell's scenarios for the future, I couldn't help but notice the prominence of the leadership and prosperity paradox in this article - namely a) the rich get richer, b) the gap between rich and poor increases, and c) political parties / local leaders ignore unpopular problems until they become problems of "liveability". Correlation will permit us to discover or overshadow outliers - but I disagree that it will de-humanize decisions as human effort is required for data interpretation, rule development and decision making (usually via governance and on the basis of an impact / risk based approach).

Big Data’s Travails Don’t Mean It’s Derailed | MIT Sloan Management Review

Big Data’s Travails Don’t Mean It’s Derailed | MIT Sloan Management Review | Data progress | Scoop.it
Big Data tests corporate patience, but breakthroughs on big questions are emerging. Key excerpt... At the CIO Symposium, Erik Brynjolfsson, an MIT Sloan professor and director of the Center for Digital Business, said the problem resembles that created when Anton van Leeuwenhoek began building remarkably high resolution microscopes. He could see things like “animal cules” swimming in a drop of water. The trouble was, nobody else had such a good microscope, which meant nobody else could measure things the way van Leeuwenhoek did. Brynjolfsson said big data and analytics were early in their own revolution of measurement — one that will affect management, economics (and indeed all of the social sciences) and the information economy at large. “There will be a whole new set of tools that allow us to see what’s going on in organizations, between companies, even what’s going on inside people’s heads as they make decisions,” he said.
MaverickInside's insight:
Key questions are emerging in my workplace about the value of emerging trends, data quality and big data etc. These questions are also being shaped by a focus on key opportunities / threats and how we can drive competitive advantage.. This is what a growing and innovative company does.. Does this mean Hadoop is a "how" rather than a "what"?

Data-Driven From the Ground Up: How Analytics Can Build a Better Optimization Strategy

Data-Driven From the Ground Up: How Analytics Can Build a Better Optimization Strategy | Data progress | Scoop.it
According to Forrester, digital experience and digital marketing professionals continue to rank analytics technology solutions as most top of mind for 2013.
MaverickInside's insight:
I agree that every change journey should start with a baseline and a heatmap of focus areas. In addition, the prioritisation and execution of the change agenda requires a "culture of critical" and data that is sufficient for the ultimate purpose(s). Shall we call this "culture driven analytics from the ground up"?

Data Architecture Best Practices ~ Future of CIO

"Data Architecture Best Practices" #in http://t.co/DEQRZqp5g0
MaverickInside's insight:
The key appears to be a combination of "business focus", good governance of the right things and discipline. Equally this implies a strong culture and rapidly evolving business models (requiring equally rapid changes to technology and process frameworks) which takes time to achieve - no pun intended.

Telegraph.co.uk If not a data dictatorship, why not a data democracy?
MaverickInside's insight:
VisibleNation could be just as successful as Cancer Research's crowdsourcing of data analysis activities - but it can only be successful if there is a sufficient combination of incentive, trust and controls in place to entice consumers! The balance of these "hard and soft elements" are critical for any data challenge / change management initiative.

MaverickInside's insight:
Tag management vs. Meta data management - why would they be different? I agree with the architecture being proposed but would suggest that tags are just another example of meta data that should be held in a central repository which is separate from the physical data sources!
