"Think back 20 years. Pay phones still worked, and only doctors carried pagers. Laptops weighed as much as bowling balls, and few of us had Internet access. In fact, much of what we now consider commonplace -- Google, email, WiFi, texting -- was not even possible. If that was 20 years ago, where are we going in the next 20?
We are all going mobile! Tablets, smartphones, Chromebooks -- and yet, these devices only serve as the most recent iteration of mobile technology in the classroom. Remember Netbooks? How about those old-school Macbooks that looked like toilet seat covers? What if we go back further? What about chalk and slate?"

In a recent keynote, Greg Kulowiec (@gregkulowiec) reminded teachers, "Technology is not the emphasis. It's the tool to do thoughtful work." Apps will change. Operating systems, capabilities, and even devices change. However, if we focus on a core set of essential skills -- communication, collaboration, connection and creation -- and start to develop curricula that will benefit our students regardless of the technology, then we can truly embrace a mobile curriculum."

This is a useful reflective article that reviews elements of mobile learning from the past and then projects into a future of mobile learning. One element in particular is in the concluding paragraph, cited above, where Greg Kulowiec in a recent presentation once again reminded his audience that technology is a tool. One must apply the correct tools to the problems at hand. Plus he recommends that teachers and trainers focus on four essential skils: communication, collaboration, connection and creation. These skills will benefit students regardless of the technology, applications, or mobile platform being used to teach and train with.

"Students in Angelica Navarro’s dual-language kindergarten class are just beginning to learn the basics of Spanish, their native language.
But with a growing number of Hispanic students enrolled in Kilgore ISD, school administrators have implemented the One-Way Dual Language Enrichment Program this school year, which incorporates English into the students’ learning.
Navarro has taught dual-language classes for 19 years and said the skills learned in them are necessary for all students to become successful later in life." from source: http://www.news-journal.com/
This article is important in that it validates the value of a dual language program for all students involved, not just the foreign language students, but also the native speakers. The concept that these skills improve future capabilities for students as well is very important.

"Using digital technologies to support teachers in designing effective technology-e nhanced learning (TEL).
We are working with practising teachers to research, and co-construct, an interactive Learning Design Support Environment (the Learning Designer) to scaffold teachers’ decision-making from basic planning to creative TEL design. Through this iterative research-design process we hope to address the above issues and build the means by which the teaching community can collaborate further on how best to deploy TEL. We aim to lower the TEL threshold so that the majority of teachers can engage with it in a way that draws on good practice by others and is informed by the findings of pedagogical research, thereby optimising the benefits to their learners.
Our project goals are to:
1 Research the optimal model for an effective learning design support environment (the Learning Designer)
2 Achieve an impact of the LDSE on teachers' practice in designing TEL
3 Identify the factors that are conducive to collaboration among teachers in designing TEL
4 Embed knowledge of teaching and learning in the learning design software architecture
5 Improve representations of the theory and practice of learning design with TEL."
