Why I choose this topic to be my thesis topic? When I first heard this topic, I found it very attractive. In this world full of digital information, how can we find good content we need. Later I found scoop.it and Robin Good which strengthen my view that content curation is so useful. Because I found many valuable information in his topic and it really saves me a lot of time.

Curate Large Information Collections Into Navigable Presentation-Maps with Mindomo

Curate Large Information Collections Into Navigable Presentation-Maps with Mindomo | Education Tech & Tools | Scoop.it

Robin Good: If you are looking for a content curation, mindmapping and presentation tool rolled into one, I strongly suggest you give a good road test to Mindomo.

I have been a passionate fan of mindmaps since 2007, and have created tons of them to curate my many collection of "best tools" in specific niches or learning maps on dedicated topics. You can see some of them here: http://www.mindmeister.com/users/channel/RobinGood

But with time, and the increased size of my collections, I have been searching for valid alternatives which provided greater speed, better ways to display and view the mapped info and more options to extract value from my collections.

Mindomo, which I have been heavy-testing for the last six-months, is my new reference tool not just for mindmapping but for a) curating large collections of information into a navigable cohesive whole, b) creating prezi-like presentations without needing to become an engineer.

Specifically, Mindomo integrates lots of unique and very valuable features to the basic mindmapping toolset, including:

- Capture content via browser bookmarklet

- Navigate and zoom in-out easily

- Search and embed video clips
- Search and embed images

- Search and embed audio clips

- Automatically credit all media sources utilized

- Customize look of maps in many ways

- Create presentations from your mindmaps

- Import and export to different formats + embed

- Works and syncs on iPad and Android

- Collaborative editing

- Cross-platform offline desktop app

- Custom URLs for your mindmaps

- just to name a few.

Here's a good example of what I have been able to "curate" with Mindomo:

1) http://bit.ly/ContentCurationUniverse

a very large collection of content curation tools

2) www.mindomo.com/mindmap/content-curation-for-education-98ccaad217074a07b9bff8b76effab8e ;

a navigable "presentation-map"

MindMeister and other mindmapping tools still provide good value, but in my humble opinion Mindomo, with its own limits and idiosyncracies, has earned my trust as being the most effective, powerful and feature-rich visual curation tool.

Give it a try and let me know what you think.

Robin, on the second map, I'm not able to see the whole map in one view - only each section .. is that a settings thing?

One thing I don't like about Prezi and the presentation in Mindomo is the zoom in and zoom out - it gives me vertigo .. maybe I'm just old school .. (LOL) .. but I imagine it gives you different transition effects.

Pinboard is a social bookmarking service which allows you to easily save and organize any number of links, with no limits on text descriptions. Pinboard is characterized by having a no-frills, simple interface, by being very speedy and reliable and by being able to import, sync and export all of your links easily.

Pinboard integrates also a powerful web caching and indexing feature available to "pro" accounts ($25/year) which allows you to keep a full cached and searchable copy of any bookmark you save.

Advanced edit tagging, filtering and bundling features make it easy to oganize and find links even inside very large collections.

Links saved can be set to be public or private.

All of the bookmarks saved inside Pinboard can be easily exported in a standard file format. A set of basic APIs is also available.

You can import all your existing bookmarks from Delicious, Google Bookmarks, Diigo, Firefox, Safari, and many other sources by following the instructions on the howto page.

A very useful feature called Tab Sets allows to quickly save all of your currently open browser tabs to Pinboard having the unique advantage of being able to re-open them even if you're on another machine or in a different browser.

N.B.: The site has a unique and now proven business model and is entirely self-funded. Ad-free.

My comment: Excellent bookmarking service for anyone in need of a no-frill, reliable and fast tool. The archiving feature is particularly valuable as well as the auto-syncing with multiple services (Instapaper, Read It Later, Twitter. Delicious).

The service has a one-time fee of around $10.

EdCanvas is a web service which allows you to search, find, clip and collect any kind of content, from text to video clips and to organize it into visual boards for educational and learning purposes.

Differently than Pinterest, EdCanvas is specifically targeted at the education world and at schools and teachers, and it makes possible not just to collect "images" from web pages, but to collect and organize whichever content elements you want, including full web pages.

EdCanvas boards also offer the ability to easily reposition each item in the collection according to your preferences and it provides a number of pre-set layout options for displaying content in your boards.

The strongest feature for EdCanvas is an integrated search engine, which allows you to search for images, websites, video clips across Google, YouTube and Flickr, and lets you grab and drop any relevant result into anyone of your collections. Furthermore Edcanvas can connect directly to your Dropbox or Google Drive giving you access to all of your personal library files.

Doesn't this venture rather far down path of specialization? First....what can it do that you can't do with several other platforms? Second...how is it any better than putting a YouTube Channel on a mobile platform?

Curation and reblogging

Curation and reblogging | Education Tech & Tools | Scoop.it

"While both can lead consumers on a unexpected journey, chasing the white rabbit into previously unexplored corners of the web, [a Curator] actually helps sift through the media abyss, singling out worthwhile information, and often “adding value” by lending context through their own ideas and opinions. The former are rebloggers."

Great pick by Robin Good where writer Chris DeLine goes through the recent attacks on Tumblr to actually paint an interesting picture of Curation as something "not entirely different than Creation."

Reading this article took me back to when we started Scoop.it. Back then, we felt the need - in spite of Tumblr's already growing success back then - for a platform dedicated to Curation. While some questioned the opportunity, this post and the growing success not just of Scoop.it but other curation services are a great sign of the legitimacy of that need.

Interestingly as well, it's fascinating to me to see that post curated with one angle by Robin, with another angle by Jan and then by me with a different twist again. This is typical of this idea that Curation is some form of creation: by enabling expression. I would not have picked up Drake's opening comment nor would I have thought about writing about it but I can more easily express some thought on a piece of already-existing content. Hopefully adding context for a particular audience which - with great satisfaction - we see Scoop.it users develop a lot more (and in a better way) than - says DeLine - "rebloggers, basking in all the beautiful projections on their Tumblr sites and Pinterest pages, hoping that someone (anyone!) stumbles across them and sees the collection as a reflection of themselves."

Curate Educational Content Discovery and Collection with instaGrok Search

Robin Good: Instagrok is a web-based app that makes it easy to find relevant information on a specific topic, and to collect the bits that are of most value to you.

Instagrok presents itself with a search interface in which the results are represented as a dynamic mindmap whose nodes can be explored by simply clicking on them.

In addition, on the right side of the screen Instagrok provides an aggregated selection of:

a) key facts

b) educational web sites articles on the topic

c) video clips

d) images

e) quizzes

f) glossaries

Any information item in these sections can be easily collected and stored inside your personal Journal, an automatic bibliography-builder which captures any and all of your peferred items.

Key facts, web site content, glossaries, images and video sections offer lots of useful materials instantly, while I am a bit more skeptical about the value and effectiveness of quizzes.

Though the interface leaves lots to be desired and has a typical "academic" feel, the content and results that were offered me in my tests were quite good and the use of pins to build an annotated journal of resource son a topic seems to me to be very effective.

Free to use.
