The Tibetan Conflict

The Tibetan Conflict | Dalai Lama XIV | Scoop.it

Tibet is an area of central Asia claimed by the People’s Republic of China, but to Tibetans it’s an independent country occupied by China.  Since invading Tibet, China has imposed a systematic settlement of Tibet by large numbers of Han.  Tibetans believe that the Chinese migration has watered down Tibetan culture and destroyed Tibet.  The 14th Dalai Lama led the Tibetan government in exile called the Central Tibetan Administration.  The Central Tibetan Administration claims to be the only legitimate government of Tibet and considers the Chinese occupation and colonization of Tibet illegal.

Service

"Our prime purpose in this life is to help others. And if you can't help them, at least don't hurt them." —Dalai Lama XIV

dalailama's insight:

“In the deepest sense, distinction between leaders and followers is meaningless” (Dee Hock, “The Art of Chaordic Leadership” 88).  The Dalai Lama calls on everyone to serve.  He erases the lines between leaders and followers by calling on everyone to serve.  Leaders serve their followers, and followers serve their leaders.  The Dalai Lama leads his followers to make a difference by helping others.  (Unit 2: Lead by Serving)

dalailama's insight:

The Dalai Lama XIV worked with Hollywood producers to portray the Tibetan conflict and Buddhism  in the West.  His work in Hollywood brought global attention to Tibet and Chinese abuse, without selling his people to Hollywood.  His navigation of the corporate West to use the media to promote awareness of Chinese occupation in Tibet shows the ability of his decision making and how strategic of a leader he is. Flight of the Dalai Lama into Exile (1959) | Dalai Lama XIV | Scoop.it

The Dalai Lama fled to Dharmasala, India in 1959 during the violent confrontation between the Chinese military and Tibet.

dalailama's insight:

The Dalai Lama XIV made the decision to preseve his safety during the extremely turbulent time of the conflict where millions of Tibetans died under Chinese invasion.  It was a huge decision to make as some saw his flight from Tibet as abandonment.  The Dalai Lama kept his campaign alive in India and was better able to fight for Tibet's survival under international attention.  The Dalai Lama is strategic as a leader and making decisions that benefit the greater goal. From Lhamo Thondup to Dalai Lama

From Lhamo Thondup to Dalai Lama | Dalai Lama XIV | Scoop.it

In 1937, the Tibetan government sent out a mission to find a successor to the 13th Dalai Lama who died in 1935.  Members of the team followed signs and omens, leading them to the village of Taktser where they found Lhamo Thondup.  The future 14th Dalai Lama was barely two years old at the time.  Members of the team performed a series of tests to determine whether the child was the reincarnation of the thirteen previous Dalai Lamas.  Thondup correctly identified personal objects belonging to the 13th Dalai Lama, and he was determined the 14th Dalai Lama of Tibet.

Ethical Leadership

"Today, more than ever before, life must be characterized by a sense of Universal responsibility, not only nation to nation and human to human, but also human to other forms of life." —Dalai Lama XIV

dalailama's insight:

"Indifference or silence to unethical behvaior demoralizes people, destroys organizations, and strangles our nation" (Bethel, "A Leader has High Ethics: Building Trust with Your Followers" 129).  The Dalai Lama calls on everyone to take accountability for their actions.  It requires others to put more thought into their actions and realize the consequences their actions have.  The Dalai Lama XIV promotes seeing the world as an interconnected web of active and engaged citizens that have respect for the integrity of all forms of life.  (Unit 3: Understanding Ethical Leadership)
