Higher Ed should get over its love affair with iPad | Curtin iPad User Group | Scoop.it
It's no secret iPad owners love their devices. The American Customer Satisfaction Index and NPD both report unusually high satisfaction rates for iPad. Just in second quarter, Apple sold more than 9 million tablets, generating $6 billion in revenue.

A bit of a rant, but some interesting points.

Apple has added in some controls to Guided Access that lets teachers turn off the ability to use Safari to look up answers while taking a test. In fact, you can disable and enable all sorts of custom controls. You can use ‘Single App Mode’ where a student can ONLY use the app that’s delivering the test.

The pen that revolutionises your iPad...

I noted the actual Kickstarter site the other day - but this story might interest users:

Robert Yearsley believes his app and pen solves the problem of handwriting, drawing and collaboration on the iPad - and customers believe in him, already pledging tens of thousands of dollars sight unseen.

Collusion, he says, turns the iPad into a useful productivity device for business and education, rather than for just entertainment. It includes a high precision pen and storage of files in the cloud, similar to Google Docs, allowing for real-time collaboration.

Collusion - iPad pen productivity solved

Precision Digital Pen, App & Cloud Service. The iPad productivity tool we've all been waiting for. It's like Google Docs for pen input.

A Completely different approach to iPad productivity.

Collusion is a radically different approach to productivity that builds on the highest value things we use writing and drawing for: Creativity and Collaboration. Think of Collusion as Google Docs for pen input. It's a generalist tool for taking notes, developing ideas, research, annotation, planning, sketching, journaling, and presenting, with the twist that you can do all these things collaboratively in real time via the cloud.

The Best iPad Styluses [Best Of] | Cult of Mac

The Best iPad Styluses [Best Of] | Cult of Mac | Curtin iPad User Group | Scoop.it

“If you see a stylus they failed.” That might be everybody’s favorite Steve Jobs quote about touch screens, but the fact is the finger is terrible at both drawing and writing — just look at your kid’s scrawlings up on the refrigerator door if you don’t believe me.

If you want to make pictures and words that the rest of the world can recognize as such, you need a little help. Luckily, iPad accessory makers also ignored Jobs’ complaints and set out to fill the world with wonderful iPad pens. Here are the best you can buy."

Why I abandoned my AppleTV for Airserver

Why I abandoned my AppleTV for Airserver | Curtin iPad User Group | Scoop.it

In summary, I traded a $100 piece of hardware for a $12 bit of software that allows streaming of iPad screens to my smartboard in a format large enough to read from the back of the classroom.

We've been using Airserver for a couple of weeks now and find it very reliable. The thing I like is that you can have multiple devices on the screen at the same time (e.g. an iPhone AND iPad). Plus there is a PC version as well.

How to Remote Wipe an iPhone or iPad...

If you have an iPhone, iPad, or iPod, you can remotely wipe the device with the help of an excellent free service offered through iCloud called “Find My iPhone” (or Find My iPad, etc). This is perfect for situations where a lost device is long gone with no chance of recovery, because it erases anything that is personally identifying, be it emails, texts, contacts, apps, quite literally everything. If you don’t have this configured yet and you don’t know how to use it, set aside some time to learn, it only takes a few minutes.

One approach to setting up the iPad for shared use among multiple users | Emerging Education Technology | Curtin iPad User Group | Scoop.it
The iPad is inherently an individualized device - 'Our Pad' makes it easier to work around that.

A growing number of faculty and staff members at The College of Westchester have been using iPads and we’re always learning more about their functionality and potential uses. One idea that comes up from time to time is the possibility of using them in multi-user situations. Perhaps we could have iPads available to loan for use within the Library, or maybe a few people in a department or work group might want to share the use of one?

OnLive Desktop Plus Puts Windows 7 on the iPad in Blazing Speed - State of the Art

OnLive Desktop Plus Puts Windows 7 on the iPad in Blazing Speed - State of the Art | Curtin iPad User Group | Scoop.it
The fastest high-speed Internet service is courtesy of OnLive Desktop Plus. The “plus” is a 1-gigabit-a-second Net connection with the ability to view Flash videos on your iPad.

Your iPad can’t play Flash videos on the Web. Mine can.

Your copy of Windows needs constant updating and patching and protection against viruses and spyware. Mine is always clean and always up-to-date.

No, I’m not some kind of smug techno-elitist; you can have all of that, too. All you have to do is sign up for a radical iPad service called OnLive Desktop Plus.
