FDA recalls anti-TB drug

FDA recalls anti-TB drug | Current Events 2014 | Scoop.it
The Food and Drug Administration (FDA) has recalled an anti-tuberculosis drug from the local market. In an advisory issued yesterday, the FDA said “all consumers are advised not to purchase or use” Picinaf (generic name rifampicin) 450-milligram capsules because laboratory analysis showed them to be below the required potency and would expose patients to a suboptimal dose of the drug. Picinaf, manufactured by J.M. Tolmann Laboratories Inc. and distributed by Generics Pharmacy, presents a safety risk and possible adverse consequences to consumers. According to the FDA, rifampicin is used for the treatment of pulmonary and extra-pulmonary tuberculosis. The FDA ordered distributors, retailers, hospitals, pharmacies and clinics to discontinue the further use or sale of the product. The agency also ordered its field officers to monitor the availability of the product in the market. – Mayen Jaymalin
Ellie Slater's insight:

This is definitely a good move. I think that they need to test drugs more thoroughly next time.

Witness: Mom who tried to kill daughter insane | Current Events 2014 | Scoop.it
BEULAH, Mich. — Kelli Stapleton met the legal definition of insanity when attempting to kill herself and her autistic daughter, a forensic psychiatrist said Tuesday, while Stapleton's ex-husband testified that she had become increasingly irrational and "crazy."Defense witnesses testified at length about the Michigan woman's desperate struggle to raise the sometimes-violent child and Stapleton's growing fears after suffering repeated assaults, some severe enough to require hospital treatment. She pleaded guilty last month to first-degree child abuse, admitting she drove daughter Isabelle to an isolated Benzie County spot in 2013,...
Ellie Slater's insight:

I think it is extremely scary that a lady needing a  psychiatrist on a daily basis should be looking after her daughter. Especially if it was at the extend of when her daughter could possibly be in danger. This really scares me they should do something about this.
