John Tyler - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The death of U.S. Representative John Clopton in the fall of 1816 left a vacancy in the 23rd district. Tyler sought the seat, and as did his friend and political ally Andrew Stevenson. As the two men did not differ politically, the race was a popularity contest.
