Nearly half of fracking happens in places short on water

Nearly half of fracking happens in places short on water | Culture Collapse Disorder | Scoop.it

Fracking for oil and gas is a thirsty business.

Hydraulic fracturing uses large amounts of pressurized water — mixed with sand and chemicals — to crack subterranean rocks and release oil or natural gas. Up to 10 million gallons of water can go into a single well.

And according to a new study, it’s happening in many places where water supplies are already stretched perilously thin.

The study, released today by the nonprofit group Ceres, examined 25,450 fracked wells across the United States and found that 47 percent lie in areas that face high or extremely high “water stress.” In those areas, at least 80 percent of the available fresh water is already being used in homes, farms or businesses.

The numbers have big implications...(click title for more)

Study finds airborne contamination in Wood Buffalo directly linked to oilsands development

Study finds airborne contamination in Wood Buffalo directly linked to oilsands development | Culture Collapse Disorder | Scoop.it

Researchers are excited over a recently concluded air-quality study that traces the path of pollutants primarily emanating from oilsands operations for the first time.

Combining forces for four years with senior scientists from Canada, the United States and Europe, staff from the Wood Buffalo Environmental Association found 23 per cent of the airborne contaminants in the region are spread through upgraders and combustion, 19 per cent are contained in sand carried by the wind from the edge of tailings ponds, 15 per cent are scattered by dust kicked up on roads and in limestone quarries, 15 per cent are contained within materials used during processing, and 15 per cent are produced by human activities associated with the rapidly growing City of Fort McMurray.

Results of the study, completed in 2012, are contained in a book called (click title to continue)

Tar Sands Tailings Contaminate Alberta Groundwater

Tar Sands Tailings Contaminate Alberta Groundwater | Culture Collapse Disorder | Scoop.it

The massive tailings ponds holding billions of litres of tar sands waste are leaking into Alberta's groundwater, according to internal documentsobtained by Postmedia's Mike De Souza.

An internal memorandum prepared for Natural Resources Minister Joe Oliver and obtained through Access to Information legislation says evidence confirms groundwater toxins related to bitumen mining and upgrading are migrating from tailings ponds and are not naturally occurring as government and industry have previously stated.

"The studies have, for the first time, detected potentially harmful, mining-related organic acid contaminants in groundwater outside a long-established out-of-pit tailings pond," the memo reads. "This finding is consistent with publicly available technical reports of seepage... Click TITLE for more
