Childs Play
Caitlin Maher's insight:

Childs Play is a website about the picture story books they create. They ensure that they reflect diversity seen in society in which we all live in and they stereotypes seen. The books are under the headings of diversity and equality or disability, gender, heritage and family.

I think that this is a great idea and i will most definitly implement these picture books into my future classroom. I love how they incorporate all people and everyone is equal. This allows everyone to be seen and shows what a real normal world should be, with everyone getting a fair chance and go and no one is different, yet we all are human and the same.

Kate Miller-Heidke - Caught In The Crowd

Music video by Kate Miller-Heidke performing Caught In The Crowd. (C) 2009 Sony Music Entertainment Australia Pty Ltd.
Caitlin Maher's insight:

This lovely song by Kate Miller-Heidke tells an underlying story of bullying. It explores into the themes of being "Caught in the crowd" meaning just being a follower and because of caring what others think not standing up for what you truly believe in.

The themes of bullying and being who you are and not caring what others think is a highly important issue that should be targeted at all children throughout school. I will show this clip to my students and then have a class discission about what they viewed in the clip and what ways this bullying could have been prevented. Children care so much about having friends and being popular, that unfortunatlly bullying is a very prominent theme that runs throughout all schools. So making the children aware of the issues involved with bullying and ways to impliment and prevent bullying is of significant importance.

Australian Prime Minister Kevin Rudd apology speech

February 13, 2008 "Sorry Day" - Australian Prime Minister Kevin Rudd addresses the Australian House of Commons, apologizing for the government programs which...
Caitlin Maher's insight:

This speech, performed by Kevin Rudd is one that stops people in their way. The high importance and significance of this speech was a real mark in the history of Australia. An apology to the Indigenous Australians, those who are the real owners of the land, deserved to have this done a long long time ago. Finally, in 2008 Mr Kevin Rudd perofrmed this apology to a large audience and to all Australian whom were watching at home. This speech and the historical background of this issue would be a fantastic resource to be implimented into the classroom. It would be an introduction into the amazing heart wrenching past history of Australia.

In education, Pakistan is failing its children

In education, Pakistan is failing its children | Culture and Belonging | Scoop.it
The Taliban might be against girls being educated, but they are not the only problem.
Caitlin Maher's insight:

This article gives an insight into the other cultures of the world and how education is held in their view, along with equality and gender discrimination. The story of Malala Yousafzai is one of a kind, with her being shot in the head by the talbian because she fought for the right in education for women.

It is just amazing and so shocking to see such countries live in this way, 67 per cent of Pakistani girls and 81 per cent of boys allowed go to primary school. To think this is happening just proves how lucky we are to live in this country.

I will make it a must to impliment these world issues in my class room, giving an insight to the children of how other countries opperate and live by such rules and standards. This will then hopefully open up the students minds into such global issues and think about others and how lucky we are.

Rabbit Proof Fence (2002) Trailer

Rabbit Proof Fence (2002) Directed by Phillip Noyce Executive Produced by Jeremy Thomas
Caitlin Maher's insight:

Rabbit Proof Fence is a fabulous movie which is based in 1931 around the stolen generation. The film embarks on the themes of hope, determination and strength. It is based on a true story from the stolen generation which explores into the life of three young girls who were torn away from their family and sent to locked up in the camps which the government had created. It is the childrens story about them running away from the camp to retun home to their mother. This heart breaking film would be suitable for year 5-6 children who would be studying the history of Australia. The film brings up many themes of the justice and injustice, moral rightness based on ethics, rationality, law, natural law, religion, equity and fairness.

This exhibition gives an insight into other peoples worlds and day to day activities and living that others are not aware of. "visitors to find connections with others, as well as challenge the assumptions we make about each other every day"
