The Cuban-born athlete represented her birth country at the 2000 Sydney Olympics, finishing fourth, and became world number one in 2003. Having failed to obtain a British passport in time for the Athens Olympics in 2004 she chose to compete for Sudan, finishing fifth.

Cuban human rights activists report dissidents injured in crackdown

The (Ladies in White) and their supporters were forced onto police buses and driven to the nearby city of Palma Soriano, where some of them lived, Sánchez said. From there, some went on to the nearby town of Palmarito del Cauto and tried to stage a “vigil.”


A mob of angry government supporters again attacked the dissidents, this time hitting them with sticks, iron bars and rocks and sending at least eight of them to a nearby hospital for treatment. Several suffered cuts that required sutures, Sánchez added.
