More than 170 passengers on the Crown Princess cruise ship have fallen ill with norovirus, The Associated Press reported Sunday.
Bryan Sherman's insight:
This is what I did my case study on. And people need to be more careful about eating luke-warm food and to keep washing their hands cause that's how people get sick.

Can Brands Recycle Their Web Ads for Instagram Video?

Can Brands Recycle Their Web Ads for Instagram Video? | Cruise Ship | Scoop.it

instagram video has only been live for a month, but carnival cruises found a way to use it to distribute existing 15-second ads.

Carnival Cruises is among the latest to tap into fast-growing Instagram video, posting nine clips featuring archetypal sun-filled holiday scenes of passengers tanning and a smiling bartender mixing fruity drinks. And then sometime last week, all of them disappeared.

Sometime after the ads were posted, the company's marketing department removed them, believing they may have violated of Instagram's terms of service, said a Carnival spokeswoman. It's not clear that Carnival did violate the terms and Instagram declined to comment on it.The videos weren't shot using Instagram and thus were missing the sepia-toned, artfully out-of-focus aesthetic that characterizes much of its photography.

Some of the clips had previously been posted to Carnival's YouTube page, according to Peter Gonzalez, president of Bold Man and The Sea Media, an agency that works for the brand. Because Instagram doesn't have a built-in tool for uploading already-edited footage (it directs users to shoot and edit video inside the app), Carnival used a workaround.

It's extraordinary how a lengthening of just 80 feet will add almost 200 extra cabins.
Daryl Santos's comment, September 29, 2014 12:08 PM
Wow this was a super interesting read. I had no idea they even did that to cruises. I think its great how modern engineering even allows you to first create such huge ships and then further expand them by cutting them in half.

I believe it is a great idea for people who like to dine at the New York restaurant but are not from New York it gives them a chance to enjoy the same type of meals. In my case I would love for an american cruise line to have a Chipotle Mexican Grill restaurant on board...my dream come true!

This is interesting because this is Costas biggest competition as far as cruising Italian style. Though this soinds awesome, Costa definitely has the Italian style down :) but then again I'm a little biased.

Jasmin Pacheco's comment, September 14, 2014 4:17 PM
FINALLY A CRUISE WITH DRINKS INCLUDED! Haha! I think its totally worth it. People go on cruises and, from my experience, most of the passengers try to sneak on alcohol just because every drink is sold individually and not all-included. This will definitely benefit the cruise line itself and the passengers as it offers a one time payment.
Ingrid Hentschel's curator insight, September 15, 2014 4:15 PM

This would get my attention! It's great to see that cruise line's can cater to those who love to eat and drink a lot on board. Also saves us a lot of money knowing how expensive it can be!

Daryl, I agree with you that this a wonderful feature! I can't tell you how many times my luggage was lost:)
Julia Gonzalez's comment, September 3, 2014 2:42 PM
These technological advances are astounding! A blessing and a curse, if you think about it. While things are becoming more accessible and convenient such as the luggage locator, it's lessening the need for human workers. Although the robot bartender is a unique and attractive feature to guests and will keep the owners happy by pouring exact amounts into drinks, the human element of the bartender is lost. Again, it's a blessing and a curse, I think we should be weary of technology replacing the human element.
Chi Vo's curator insight, October 7, 2014 11:30 PM

Royal Caribbean is very good in keeping up with their high-tech reputation. Quantum of the Sea is already the most innovative cruise in the industry with many activities such as stimulated sky-diving, on-board surfing, electronic bumping car, rock climbing wall. Together with all the new technologies mentioned in the article, this cruise ship really is pushing the industry standard to a totally new level. I do agree these are wonderful features. Though, are cruise passengers ready for these new technologies? Passengers age from 40 years old plus make up more than half of the cruise market. Would all these very innovative technologies enhance the experiences of these passengers or make them more frustrated? Furthermore, while this ‘Smart Tech Package’ makes things much more convenient, exciting and easier accessible, it is lessening the human interaction and enjoyment. We have to be very careful in what we offer to our customers.

Mi Dispiace: Costa Concordia captain apologizes to survivors

Mi Dispiace: Costa Concordia captain apologizes to survivors | Cruise Ship | Scoop.it

(Reuters) - The captain blamed for the Costa Concordia cruise liner disaster off the Italian coast that killed 32 people in January shook hands with survivors and apologized on Monday at a court hearing which will decide whether the case goes to a full trial.

Francesco Schettino appeared relaxed and spoke often to his legal team, the lawyer representing 80 U.S. survivors and family members said.

The 114,500 tonne luxury cruise ship capsized on January 13 after approaching the Tuscan island of Giglio to perform a maneuver close to the shore known as a salute. It struck a rock which tore a gash in its hull.

Schettino has admitted he made mistakes but has accused the company of mishandling the response. He said last week he was suing Costa Cruises, a unit of Carnival Corp., for unfair dismissal following the accident.

Held up to ridicule in Italy and abroad since the disaster, Schettino faces charges of multiple manslaughter and abandoning ship during a chaotic night-time evacuation of 4,200 passengers and crew. Two bodies have still not been recovered. The ship is still sitting half-submerged on a rocky shelf off the island.

Two German survivors who attended the hearing said Schettino had shaken their hands and said he was sorry...
