A research on consumer attitudes towards cross-border trade and consumer protection conducted requested by the European Commission in 2012, revealed that most Europeans feel confident about buying something online from a domestic vendor, but not yet from a vendor in another EU country. Online consumers in Europe's attitude towards cross border shopping is developing, increasing opportunities for US E-Commerce companies to increase their sales in Europe.

Offering to European consumers an effective and cost efficient distribution service, plus a solid return policy is key to be successful in developing sales in this market.

The biggest impact of this new EU Directive on retailers will be the requirement for them to display in advance both the shipping costs and returns costs.

Retailers have now to estimate the cost of return shipping and unless they have a direct contract with distributors and delivery operators, they will never be able to know the exact delivery and returns costs to and from different European Countries.

B2C Europe's curator insight, July 31, 2014 9:11 AM

B2C Europe (UK)'s curator insight, August 6, 2014 6:56 AM

Legislation does not have to be a barrier to cross border trading.  The key thing is to ensure that companies take into account the additional costs of meeting these new rules.  The most important being a returns solution.  Consumers will trust a company that can provide cost effective and easy to use solutions.
