Strategies need to be developed to address these challenges to determine “When Where and How Root and Tuber Crops Will Lead the Next Agricultural Revolution”. Unquestionably, in the next 20 years, tropical root and tuber crops will play a significant role in ensuring a sustainable agricultural development in the tropics. Hence, this Symposium provides an opportunity for experts from around the world to meet and address this agenda. The Symposium will be jointly organized by the International Society for Tropical Root Crops (ISTRC) and the International Center of Tropical Agriculture (CIAT). It will be an excellent opportunity for those interested in root and tuber crops from around the world to come together to share and compare knowledge and expertise. It will be an opportunity for Colombia and other Latin American countries to showcase their expertise and for workers from other parts of the world to learn and experience first-hand.

16 February 2018, Rome - Faced with the infestation of millions of hectares of maize, most in the hands of smallholder farmers, and the relentless spread of Fall Armyworm (FAW) across most of Africa, the UN Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO) launched today a comprehensive guide on the integrated pest management of the FAW on maize. The guide was developed with a host of partners: International Institute of Tropical Agriculture (IITA), International Centre of Insect Physiology and Ecology (ICIPE), Lancaster University, Centre for Agriculture and Bioscience International (CABI), Empresa Brasileira de Pesquisa Agropecuária (EMBRAPA), Colegio de la Frontera Sur (ECOSUR) and the United States Department of Agriculture (USDA). It will help smallholder farmers and frontline agricultural staff to manage FAW more effectively amidst fears that FAW may push more people into hunger. Central and Southern Africa are particularly on high alert, as the main maize growing season is currently underway in these regions.

Review offers hope for breaking soilborne curse in Africa Root-knot nematodes, a highly destructive group of soil dwelling worms that infect most, if not all cultivated crops, are probably one of the greatest threats to agriculture in SSA. Therefore, for the region’s food security goals to be achieved, these pests, alongside other nematode species, must be wholly integrated into efforts to improve agricultural productivity. Encouragingly, slow but steady progress made over the past 20 years indicates an optimistic outlook for an otherwise daunting endeavour. These findings are presented in a review published recently by researchers from the International Institute of Tropical Agriculture (IITA), International Centre of Insect Physiology and Ecology (icipe), Kenya, Queen’s University Belfast, United Kingdom, University of Ibadan, Nigeria, Sugar Cane Research Institute, Tanzania, and Makerere University, Uganda. The first of its kind in terms of scope, the study presents a thorough overview of nematode pests in SSA, locating this menace within the continent’s highly intricate agricultural landscape.

Unleashing parasitic wasps When the invasive cassava pink mealybug first began devastating vast areas of Thailand's cassava crops in 2008, farmers reacted by dousing their fields with toxic insecticides, which posed high environmental and human risks. Yongfan Piao, senior plant protection officer at FAO's regional office in Bangkok, said that the country had lost an estimated six million tonnes of cassava root from the forecast for the 2009/10 harvest. He explained that “the total cost of 6 million tonnes of cassava would be the equivalent of some US$600 million. The estimated losses caused by the mealybug for this period would be over US$14 million.”

Cassava is the second most important staple food crop in terms of per capita calories consumed in Africa and holds potential for climate change adaptation. Unfortunately, productivity in East and Central Africa is severely constrained by two viral diseases: cassava mosaic disease (CMD) and cassava brown streak disease (CBSD). CBSD was first reported in 1936 from northeast Tanzania. For approximately 70 years, CBSD was restricted to coastal East Africa and so had a relatively low impact on food security compared with CMD. However, at the turn of the 21st century, CBSD re-emerged further inland, in areas around Lake Victoria, and it has since spread through many East and Central African countries, causing high yield losses and jeopardizing the food security of subsistence farmers. This recent re-emergence has attracted intense scientific interest, with studies shedding light on CBSD viral epidemiology, sequence diversity, host interactions and potential sources of resistance within the cassava genome. This review reflects on 80 years of CBSD research history (1936–2016) with a timeline of key events. We provide insights into current CBSD knowledge, management efforts and future prospects for improved understanding needed to underpin effective control and mitigation of impacts on food security.
