Emmanuel Goldstein (George Orwell), Ignorance is Strength (1949)

Emmanuel Goldstein (George Orwell), Ignorance is Strength (1949) | think2share | Scoop.it
think2share's insight:

But the principal, underlying cause was that, as early as the beginning of the twentieth century, human equality had become technically possible. It was still true that men were not equal in their native talents and that functions had to be specialized in ways that favoured some individuals against others; but there was no longer any real need for class distinctions or for large differences of wealth. In earlier ages, class distinctions had been not only inevitable but desirable. Inequality was the price of civilization."

Capitalism develops into cultural hyper- industrialism. Its goal is the mass production of behaviour, inevitably leads to a hyper-synchronization that tends to result in the attenuation of desire.

Degrowth and Radical Ecological Democracy: A View from the South | degrowth.de

Degrowth and Radical Ecological Democracy: A View from the South | degrowth.de | think2share | Scoop.it
think2share's insight:
There are at least five crucial elements or pillars of radical ecological democracy:Ecological sustainability, including the conservation of nature (ecosystems, species, functions, cycles) and its resilience, and ensuring that human activities are within the known limits. This is the basis, for instance, of action by hundreds of communities to impose resource use limits on themselves, on their own or with help from civil society or the government, in community-managed forests.Social well-being and justice, including lives that are physically, socially, culturally, and spiritually fulfilling, where there is equity (including gender equity) in socio-economic and political entitlements, benefits, rights and responsibilities, and where cultural diversity is celebrated and promoted. Attempts to bring back a discussion on ancient Indian beliefs in ‘enoughness’, voluntary simplicity or austerity, without falling into the trap of bigoted religiosity, are part of this.Direct democracy, where decision-making starts at the smallest unit of human settlement, in which every human has the right, capacity and opportunity to take part; building on this, envisaging larger levels of governance that are downwardly accountable, defined on the basis of ecological and cultural contiguity and linkages (‘ecoregions’ or ‘biocultural’ regions).Economic democracy, in which local communities (including producers and consumers, often combined in one) have control over the means of production, distribution, exchange, markets; where localization is a key principle, and larger trade and exchange are built on it. This is the basis of several initiatives at producer companies and cooperatives, and producer-consumer linkages in fields such as food and crafts. The re-invention of non-monetised exchanges (barter and other forms), infused with equity principles that may have been weak in the past, has to be part of this process.Knowledge commons, where the generation, conservation, transmission and use of knowledge (including traditional and modern forms) are collective processes, not confined to formal sector ‘experts’ or to state or corporate run institutions. This is the basis of the struggle against intellectual property rights in life-forms and related knowledge, and of several initiatives at combining traditional and modern knowledge for well-being.

2. Podium: Sharing-Economy – eine Abkehr vom Besitzgedanken?

2. Podium: Sharing-Economy – eine Abkehr vom Besitzgedanken? | think2share | Scoop.it

think2share's insight:

"Teilen statt wegwerfen, nutzen statt besitzen.

Scene from The Passion of Anna - YouTube

The Passion of Anna (original Swedish title En Passion) is a 1969 drama film written and directed by Ingmar Bergman. http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0064793/
think2share's insight:

En Passion was one of Bergman’s favorite films, “partly because of the six-minute close-up monologue of the Liv Ullmann character talking about her marriage. ‘It’s just running,’ he remarks. “The camera doesn’t move. That is, to me, the most alive moment in my whole career, (...)  My basic concern in making films was to dramatize the all-importance of communication, of the capacity for feeling. My Films are not concerned— as many critics have theorized—with God or his absence, but with the saving force of love. Each film, you see, has its moment of contact, of human communication. A tiny moment in each film—but the crucial one. What matters most of all in life is being able to make that contact with another human. Otherwise you are dead, as so many people today are dead. But if you can take that first step toward communication, toward understanding, toward love, then no matter how difficult the future may be—and have no illusions, even with all the love in the world, living can be hellishly difficult—then you are saved. That is all that matters."

Degrowth | A vocabulary for a new era

Degrowth | A vocabulary for a new era | think2share | Scoop.it
think2share's insight:

We live in an era of stagnation, rapid impoverishment, rising inequalities and socio-ecological disasters. In the dominant discourse, these are effects of economic crisis, lack of growth or underdevelopment. This book argues that growth is the cause of these problems and that it has become uneconomic, ecologically unsustainable and intrinsically unjust.

The Davos oligarchs are right to fear the world they’ve made | Seumas Milne | think2share | Scoop.it
Seumas Milne: Escalating inequality is the work of a global elite that will resist every challenge to its vested interests
think2share's insight:

"It’s only through a challenge to the entrenched interests that have dined off a dysfunctional economic order that the tide of inequality will be reversed. Crocodile tears about inequality are a symptom of a fearful elite. But change will only come from unrelenting social pressure and political challenge." See also: http://www.sharing.org/information-centre/blogs/world-‘sharing-and-caring’-won’t-begin-davos
