Police can now use DNA evidence to predict your eye color

Police can now use DNA evidence to predict your eye color | Crimnal Justice Aspect 2 | Scoop.it
We all know that DNA evidence can make or break a forensic investigation, but it's not uncommon for police to encounter DNA at a crime scene that doesn't match with entries in any DNA databases.

Eye color can be told by Dna.

A team of Dutch scientists has now developed a genetic screen, called IrisPlex, that can help police determine with 94% accuracy whether a suspect has blue eyes or brown, just from a sample of their DNA. Is this the dawn of a new era in forensic investigation?

IrisPlex works by searching for single-letter differences in your genetic code called single nucleotide polymorphisms, or SNPs, that are strongly linked to eye color; the genetic screening kit searches for six of these SNPs in total, labeling them as blue, brown, or undefined (undefined corresponding to an intermediate color like green or grey) as it evaluates the DNA under scrutiny.

Columbus police are reviewing about 3,000 DNA test results, the department announced Wednesday, saying updated reporting procedures weren't always followed.

That's because not all DNA tests relate to a suspect — some could belong to a victim or witness, she said. In addition, other factors could have led to a prosecution, including witnesses, confessions, fingerprints or surveillance video.

SAN FRANCISCO — Law enforcement in California may continue to collect DNA from people arrested for felonies — even if they are never formally charged — and store the genetic profiles in a criminal database, a federal appeals court ruled Thursday.

Dna swabbing felons on arrest for further details and profiling Law enforcement in California may continue to collect DNA from people arrested for felonies — even if they are never formally charged — and store the genetic profiles in a criminal database, a federal appeals court ruled Thursday.

An 11-judge panel of the U.S. 9th Circuit Court of Appeals upheld a district court decision that refused to shut down the state's practice of swabbing individuals for DNA upon arrest. The 9th Circuit said California's practice was "clearly" constitutional under a Supreme Court decision last year that upheld a similar, but narrower, program in Maryland.

Dna helps solve crimes commited in the past and recent

The investigation started about two years ago. One morning contractors at the historic Buck Hill Inn noticed about $1,000 worth of copper piping missing from the walls and ceiling.

Barrett Township Police Chief Steve Williams said the contractors noticed the thieves left a few things behind. They included a pair of gloves and cigarette butts. The local department submitted the evidence to the State Police crime laboratory. The lab doesn’t give instant results the way labs do in crime television shows. The chief said, "With DNA submissions to the lab there is a backlog and it is prioritized by the type of offense that you're actually investigation."

Criminals who inadvertently leave traces of their DNA at the crime scene now have something more to worry about.
Brett Coffman's insight:

Face reconstruction can lead to DNA testing.

But unlike previously limited efforts to map human faces using DNA, the new initiative by anthropologist and population geneticist Mark Shriver of Pennsylvania State University has taken the process to the next level. His team managed to isolate the most critical genetic variations required to create accurate facial reconstructions. They did so by using a stereoscopic camera to capture 3D images of almost 600 volunteers of various ancestry.
