T.S. Eliot Writers Residency in America

T.S. Eliot Writers Residency in America | Creative Residencies | Scoop.it
The UK-based T.S. Eliot Foundation has turned the poet’s former summer home into a writers retreat
Judith van Praag's insight:
Another wonderful opportunity for published writers.

"The foundation’s new retreat, wedged between a pair of granite outcroppings, is meant, at least partially, to return Eliot to America.

"The house, with its U-shaped porch, spacious common areas, and rows of bedrooms on the second floor, can accommodate up to five writers at a time, offering residencies of up to six weeks.

"The only requirements: Applicants must already be published; they must work in a field Eliot pursued; and, for now at least, they must be American.

“'It’s about America, really — reconnecting Eliot with America and this local area,” said Reihill. 'They can do anything that he did, so they can be editors, poets, playwrights, critics, essayists.'"

Who knew that the estate's main income is indirectly derived from royalties for "Cats"? The musical is based on Eliot’s children’s book, “Old Possum’s Book of Practical Cats.”

2018 Fees L'Atelier - Writers Retreat and Workshop in Villeferry, France

2018 Fees L'Atelier - Writers Retreat and Workshop in Villeferry, France | Creative Residencies | Scoop.it
Judith van Praag's insight:
Six days retreat at castle in France. Room & Board, solitude and companionship, craft sessions, feedback, community of peers. What else could a writer with a busy home life ask for?

The fees are very reasonable for what you get. And the option to receive a full manuscript critique within a year is attractive.

Application deadline is February 1, 2018.

If you're flying to France from the U.S., time is of the essence. Count on ticket prices going up already for the summer months. A 3-day Eurail France Pass is economic and could be enough for Paris - destination - Paris. If you travel with a companion the price of the ticket goes down!

2018 General Residency Program | I-Park Foundation, Inc. | Creative Residencies | Scoop.it
Artists-in-Residence Program | East Haddam, Connecticut
Judith van Praag's insight:
i-Park in East Haddam in Connecticut, looks like an amazing place to be. The only note of warning I'd like to add is: No wild peeing. That's how I got bit by a tick in CT. That experience won't keep me away from nature, but I wouldn't throw caution to the wind either. Read up on protection, and what to bring. Wear a hat and long sleeved shirts and pants when walking under a forest canopy, and pull socks up over the bottom of your pants legs. I'd use masking tape to keep it all in place. Better safe than sorry regarding Lyme disease. If I'm wrong about ticks in the area, so much the better.

Judith van Praag's insight:
Mount Desert Island off the coast of Maine is home to the Arcadia National Park. Imagine shades of green, gray and blue, highlighted by colorful surprises. Imagine the sound of silence, the sound of rolling waves, the aroma of forest land, living earth, and water.

Participants in the Artist-in- Residence Programs of the National Parks are responsible for their own transportation, food, etc.

Writers Residency at La maison Baldwin in Saint-Paul de Vence, France

Writers Residency at La maison Baldwin in Saint-Paul de Vence, France | Creative Residencies | Scoop.it
The deadline for applications is January 15, 2018; a decision will be announced by February 15. The 30-day residency period is flexible from late March through early May. To apply, writers are invited to send a cover letter that includes a bio, a statement about their current project and their preferred residency dates, together with 10 to 20 pages of their work, to residency@lamaisonbaldwin.fr.
Judith van Praag's insight:
Do you, does your writing answer to this description?
From the website:
"Eligible to apply are emerging writers in English of literary fiction, nonfiction, poetry and theater, the genres in which Baldwin worked.
"For our purposes, emerging writers are defined as those with a solid history of publication or literary recognition but with no more than one published book or theatrical production.

"The resident will be selected by an independent panel of established authors, who will look especially for writers working in the spirit of James Baldwin."

Typing with crossed fingers won't work, toes may have to do.

And/or consider making a donation to Les Amis de La Maison James Baldwin - Friends of The House of James Baldwin.

Writers & Filmmakers & other Creatives Retreat at Mesa Refuge | Point Reyes CA

Writers & Filmmakers & other Creatives Retreat at Mesa Refuge | Point Reyes CA  | Creative Residencies | Scoop.it
Judith van Praag's insight:
Ebb and flow, the tide, the silence and noise of the quiet, remembered so well of my youth in the Netherlands. Point Reyes, the startling contrast of colors under an overcast sky, the mellow mindset that comes with the stillness of a partially cloudy day.

Eighteen when I first set foot in Marin County, a girl born on the North Sea shore, raised in the Netherlands' low lands, I felt right at home with the mudflats, birdlife, and relative isolation.

To return, ah, to return and stay for a bit.

Apply for a Fellowship - American Academy

Apply for a Fellowship - American Academy | Creative Residencies | Scoop.it
Fellowships are restricted to US residents. US citizenship is not required. Candidates in academic disciplines must have completed a PhD at the time of application. Candidates working in other fields—such as journalism, film, law, or public policy—must have equivalent professional degrees. Writers should have published at least one book at the time of application.

Please note that artists, composers, and poets are invitation-only competitions.

Judith van Praag's insight:
This is a most generous residency. Berlin the way I remember it from a two-week engagement at the Tempodrom in 1984 a remarkable place.
Different, with the wall down, for sure. Different now that Checkpoint Charley really is nothing but history, a historical marker, and yet, the remaining walls must speak, if only in stage whispers of the city's past.

Writing Retreat In Slovenia - Where Word Smiths Gather

Writing Retreat In Slovenia - Where Word Smiths Gather | Creative Residencies | Scoop.it
Judith van Praag's insight:
Ljubljana, Slovenia, a beautiful place to be.
And the retreat? It is what it is. Or rather, it is what you make of it. Facilitated DIY.

Poet Iztok Osojnik Ph.D. offers poets & writers the opportunity to meet in an informal setting. If you want solitude, and focus on writing, there's room for that. The program, if there is such a thing, is fluid. What ever you choose to do, when you return to the roost, there will be other word smiths around.

Perusing the website, memories of my teens and adolescence in the Netherlands came to mind. All you had to do, was go to the right cafe-restaurant. You were bound to be engaged in conversations about Life, The Arts & Literature.

Correct me if I'm wrong, but I'm thinking of this Writing Retreat as a meeting place for creatives circled around the host and a couple of regulars. A Ho(s)tel-Cafe-Restaurant where word smiths gather.

$1500 for room & board and if you fly in from Western USA another $1500-2000 for a ticket and you're all set for about $3K

To Apply for a VCCA Residency Next Deadline: January 15
Judith van Praag's insight:
"What to take to VCCA?" This residency came to my attention thanks to a future resident's call for suggestions. Her suitcase was full already, what with books etc. she wrote.

Mineral School is an artists residency located in a former 1947 elementary school near Mt. Rainier, in Mineral, Washington. During summer 2018, we're offering three two-week residency periods to 8 writers of poetry and prose and 4 visual artists, providing accepted applicants with space and time to create new work without the interruptions of normal life and with the bonus of healthy meals prepared by culinary volunteers using locally-grown organic food whenever possible. Judith van Praag's insight:
A two-week residency at Mineral School looks like a real treat. Not having to think about the usual responsibilities, a chance to focus just on your writing, meals taken care of, interaction with visiting authors on location. Imagine that. And if you want to literally widen your horizon, it's only 25 minutes by car to Paradise on the slopes of splendid Mount Rainier aka Tahoma.

Writers Coop at SAFTA - Near Knoxville, Tennessee

Writers Coop at SAFTA - Near Knoxville, Tennessee | Creative Residencies | Scoop.it
In May of 2017, SAFTA opened our Writers Coop, a 10x10' dry cabin approximately 1/4 of a mile from the farmhouse. This tiny house is furnished with a single bed, a desk, a wood-burning stove, a deck that looks over the pasture and pond, as well as a personal detached outhouse. While the cabin has neither electricity nor running water, residents will have full access to the amenities at farmhouse as well as solitude from other residents to write in the rolling hills of East Tennessee.
Judith van Praag's insight:
Given that I'm writing about my childhood, growing up in the middle of the fields, with an outhouse at the far end of the barn, I'm not really fazed by lack of "modern" facilities in the Writers Coop, but I am concerned about having to put on layers and layers, each time I have to use the outhouse. I can imagine working around that too though.

Writer in Residence Katie Bell's testimony assures me: "I do my best to keep the Coop stocked with everything a person would need to stay warm. In Tennessee, temperatures rarely drop below freezing at night, and it's usually warmer during the day. Plus, the fire keeps people nice and toasty. Most residents spend their days at the farmhouse and sleep at the Coop at night. It's really a cool situation we've got going on."

Check it out, staying on the farm seems idyllic to me. They've got some openings for January and February 2018!

PAF, Performing Arts Rural Artists-Run Residency

PAF, Performing Arts Rural Artists-Run Residency | Creative Residencies | Scoop.it
Judith van Praag's insight:
This 11-year-old artists-run rural residency may be The place to organize your DIY retreat. After clicking on the link, and have scanned the Home Page content, look for the PAF URL in the right hand side bar, that website provides more info on No-nos, YES and what not. There's a small discrepancy between overnight fees shown on the different pages. But whether $450 or $475 for a month in this artistic haven, the price is a steal. The facilities seem basic, make sure you know what you're getting into, or start with a few nights, to gauche the atmosphere and attitude. This could be a perfect place to compose, write, or make art. Do-ers seem to rule. Click and read on to find out what that means.

Apply for a Residency at The MacDowell Colony

Apply for a Residency at The MacDowell Colony | Creative Residencies | Scoop.it
Give yourself the gift of time for yourself.
Judith van Praag's insight:
Applications for summer 2018 residencies accepted between October 15 -January 15

Decades ago I learned about these opportunities for writers, artists, composers and other creatives. Such a wonderful notion, to offer creatives time to work on their own projects.
TV-writer Don Dekker was the first person I knew (in the Netherlands) who stayed at one such residency, the Edward Albee Foundation's. I remember the photos of him in the company of Albee and other recipients of a fellowship. All smiles. All of them.

Life is what happens to you while you're busy making other plans.
