Does homework really work?

Does homework really work? | Creating Meaningful and Efficient Math Homework for 3rd Grade | Scoop.it
After decades spent trying to assess the value of homework, researchers still argue over the simplest findings.
Eunmi Yang's insight:

Does homework really work? Is more better? No, more is not always better when it comes to homework for students. This semester, I learned that more homework does not always mean that the students learn more. What helps homework meaningful is when the homework is short but efficient in helping the students really learn the underlying concept. In addition, I learned that homework can be very efficient for elementary school students when it relates to their own lives. For example, in my math methods class, I learned about one type of homework that relates to money. This homework requires the students to grab a take-out menu for their favorite (or one of their favorite) restaurants and ask each family member about what they would like to order. Then, the student would add the total for their "meal" for the whole family. This isn't a lot of homework but it is effective and efficient. In addition, it is important to think about the students who may not have all of the resources at home, such as a computer or even the ability to go grab a take-out menu. So the teacher should consider all of their students. One way that a teacher can make the money homework work out for all students is that the teacher can prepare some take-out menus that the students can take home. I really did learn a lot about math homework and how to make it meaningful and effective for the students. I am very excited to think outside of the box and have my students engage in meaningful homework rather than just sending them home with a bunch of math worksheets to work on.

Eunmi Yang's insight:

As I was looking through pinterest, I came upon this. The choices that the students have do not all relate to math, but I thought it was a good idea. I think it would be very nice if the students had a couple of choices to choose from and do a small activity related to math. For example, the choice about using a catalogue to make a wish list that adds up to $100 for when the students are learning about money. In addition, if the students are learning about time, they can perform a 20 minute chore. I like these ideas too because they relate to the world around them and the students are also able to see how math is around them outside of the classroom.

Zoo Math Homework

Zoo Math Homework | Creating Meaningful and Efficient Math Homework for 3rd Grade | Scoop.it
Eunmi Yang's insight:

This is an open-ended math homework. This homework was given when the students were learning about composition. I believe that this is meaningful homework because the students are to really use their understanding to figure out a solution to the word problem. Instead of just giving the students math problems, this gives the student the answer and they are to figure out a possible problem that has that answer that I provided to them. I believe that this is a short yet efficient homework because it requires the students to really think about what is reasonable and what is possible. In addition, when going over this homework, there is an opportunity for meaningful discussion in which the students can think about why the answers make sense, what answers don't make sense, there are multiple ways to solve this, and the students are able to see the process in which their peers used to solve this homework problem.

Eunmi Yang's insight:

As I was looking at some websites with homework, I found this simple math worksheet. I like this worksheet because it isn't too tedious and it relates math to the students' lives. By doing this, the student is not just practicing reading time but they are learning about how the content from class is related to their lives outside of the classroom. This would be a good homework for students who are learning about reading time and clocks. It also helps the students to read the difference in time by figuring out the duration of the tv show.

Open Ended Math Homework

Open Ended Math Homework | Creating Meaningful and Efficient Math Homework for 3rd Grade | Scoop.it
Eunmi Yang's insight:

This is also similar to the other homework assignment (the zoo math homework) in that it is an open ended math problem. This math homework also engages the student by having them use numbers/information from their own life and activities to use in the math problem. I also believe that this is a good homework assignment because the students are to understand what "and" means in the 2nd problem. This math homework can also lead to a meaningful discussion about many things and one of them can be what "and" means in the 2nd problem. This math homework relates to addition and composing numbers for 3rd graders.
