Hearing Voices: the evolution of radio ad voiceovers | Pittsburgh Post Gazette | Creating Digital Media | Scoop.it
This article discusses the major changes in radio advertising (and radio budgets!) and the voiceover industry over the last 10-20 years; and how voice actors have had to adapt to the changes in order to succeed.

Pittsburgh Post Gazette: "The voices themselves are changing, too, as Americans have come to want something different from their news and entertainment. After the world-shaking events of 9/11, that old voice-of-God power sound became a little too nerve-wracking, said Kate Bacon, principal at Well Dunne! Talent, based in Scottsdale, Ariz.

'The trend is a more conversational guy-next-door sound," said Ms. Bacon, who started her agency three years ago and has about 45 people on her list, including Mr. Pidgeon and some other Pittsburgh talent.
Delivering that sound isn't easy, she said. "The guy next door cannot do the 'guy next door.' "

Jonathan Coltogirone's insight:

The fluctuation in the radio market can be viewed almost similarly to the newspaper market that is currently in rapid decline. Though FM radio hasn't taken the major hit that AM has, the introduction of satellite and internet radio has greatly changed the landscape of radio all-together.
