AIIC backs UK legal interpreters | Court Interpreting | Scoop.it
Problems cited in AIIC’s written statement on provision of interpreting services under the Framework Agreement between ALS/Capita and the Ministry of Justice.

Adding it all up, AIIC reaches the conclusion that “the reputation of British justice is at stake (emphasis added) when the quality of this support service is judged in the light of EU Directive 2010/64 on the right to interpretation and translation in criminal proceedings.”

How many people are on remand because they did not have an interpreter? The Ministry does not know!

My buddy blogger @Alanw47 asked the Ministry of Justice (MOJ) the following question on the 28th of October: “Could you please tell me how many prisoners are in custody, on remand, awaiting the services of a Court Interpreter? I am specifically interested in prisoners who might not necessarily be in custody on remand if they could have received the services of an interpreter but there was not one available.”

Working with Interpreters: Tips for Solicitors

It is important for solicitors to appreciate that being a professional, competent legal/court interpreter is not easy. To be bilingual, no matter how competent, is never enough. A real interpreter is a professional interpreter. The legal system understands this and as a result we have procedures in place such as the 'National Agreement on Arrangements for the Use of Interpreters' plus a host of various accrediting bodies that give their stamp of approval to interpreters such as the NRPSI, IOL and ITI.
