A true friend instills courage

Have you done this for someone lately? I'd love to hear your stories of how being on either the receiving or giving end of this changed your life...

Andrea Alban's reply:

Last Saturday, I trudged out of bed after a couple of days sitting in grief over a loss. I pushed myself to drive across town to my favorite vinyasa yoga class. The sight of the room full of dear souls brought on tears. My community knows me as sunny and eternally optimistic. But I remembered prayers by Anne Lamott and Marianne Williamson and walked over to Dina, an elder yogini whose eyes are pools of love. My silent mantra was "Help." I asked her for a hug. She wrapped her arms around me. Her hug was strong and nurturing. Dina looked into my eyes and said, "After yoga, we will have a cup of tea together." Her invitation softened my pain and helped me dedicate my practice to a man I needed to forgive. In so doing, I felt my energy lighten and I learned how empowering the action of surrender and asking for support is. My heart is open today as I write about this pivotal moment in my healing process. And yes, Dina and I shared our stories over cups of tea. She handed me her card as we parted, inviting me to call anytime I needed to talk. We had been practicing yoga together for a year on a first name basis. Only then did I learn her full name: Dina Angel-Wing.
