Dozens of illicit home distilleries located in many parts of the state are producing country-made liquor which guarantees a stronger kick than any other form of alcohol.

Sources revealed that the liquor mafia is using lizard skins, alprazolam tablets and Iodex, besides intoxicating powders, to make the brew stronger. Earlier, ingredients such as rose petals, zeera and mint were used to prepare homemade liquor.

According to Bob Barchiesi, President, International Anti-Counterfeiting Coalition, Not only do counterfeit goods cost the world economy approximately $650 billion annually, but some of that obscene profit helps fuel organized crime groups and terrorist networks from New York to Hong Kong and Belgrade to New Delhi. In New York City alone, Barchiesi says, a study found counterfeit merchandise drains $1 billion just in sales tax revenue.

hanksGrowing at a compounded annual growth rate of almost 40-45 per cent, the counterfeit luxury products market in India is likely to more than double to Rs 5,600 crore from the current level of about Rs 2,500 crore, apex industry body ASSOCHM said today.

The fake market is growing because Companies and Brand are still do not consider it is a primary board agenda. Most of the companies are not using any anti-counterfeiting solutions as a proactive step to fight this menace. Those companies which are using these solutions often handover this to be discussed at the junior level by packaging guy or in some cases by purchase manager. Negative impact of counterfeiting can be diminished to a great level if it becomes a part of every brand strategy - plan and review process with the accountability of the brand owner towards its most valuable asset - i.e., Brand.

The government seized some P6.24 billion worth of counterfeit goods in the first quarter alone, already almost at par with last year’s full-year haul. In the first quarter of 2013, the value of counterfeit items confiscated by the Intellectual Property Office of the Philippines (IPOPHL) only amounted to P1.3 billion. The full-year total was P7.811 billion.
