Food Standards Agency - Nanotechnology

Food Standards Agency - Nanotechnology | Could nanotechnology modify our way of eating ? | Scoop.it
The website of the Food Standards Agency
Carla, Anaëlle, Alice's insight:

This article comes from : Food Standards Agency, a United Kingdom's government's website.

Nanotechnology is a branch of engineering that deals with very small particles whose size is less than 100 nanometres. Nowadays, nanotechnology arouse an increasing interest because thanks to their very small size,  the particles are very chemically reactive. But, nanotechnology is not new, people are already exposed to nanomaterial all day long. Nanotechnology can be used in food, for example for the packaging, but it can also be added in food in order to modify the texture or taste of food.

Nanotech's role in feeding the planet

Nanotech's role in feeding the planet | Could nanotechnology modify our way of eating ? | Scoop.it
By 2025, Earth will be home to eight billion people and securing enough food for them all is a pressing global issue.
Carla, Anaëlle, Alice's insight:

This is an article taken from an English newspaper,  The Guardian's edition of the 22 October  2013.

Nanotechnology will help feed the population of the planet which is increasing very fast. Now, people don't accept very well that technology could modify what they eat. They are more willing to accept the nanotechnology in their drugs than in what they eat. But in fact, nanotechnology is already in food even if we don’t really know it. Nowadays, there are still a lot of improvements to bring to nanotechnology, but, later it would be a revolution for the world. There are some questions that need to be answered. Until then, we need to be cautious. This technology can for example give the taste of sugar without the inconvenients of sugar, like the increase of weight; and can make broccoli taste like hamburgers, thus, people can eat healthier food. But it’s expensive, and sometimes, not very useful. Nanotechnology can also cause genetic modifications, for the agricultural production, it might be a smart answer to global food security.

Background information on nanotechnology and the need for more research and regulation regarding the method.
Carla, Anaëlle, Alice's insight:

This article comes from the Food and Water Watch's website. Food and Water Watch is an american organisation that works to make sure that the food we consume is safe, accessible to everyone and sustainably produced.

Something very interesting is that nanotechnological elements are more reactive as in a normal size, because of their higher concentration.  It’s very interesting for scientists, but it can also be a danger for health, because these nanoparticles can enter the blood, and then can move in the whole body.  Actually, these particles are very small, so they can pass the placenta barrier and reach the foetus. Nowadays, there unfortunately are unknown aspects about the effects on people. But don’t worry, the products which are in supermarkets are tested before by scientists, and approved.
