Why the Scrub-Jay Should Be Florida's State Bird — with Eva Ries

"It was as though magic happened, because I felt a pair of feet in my hand."
Tom Lee's insight:
I love Scrub Jays, though ours are a bit different here on the West Coast.  As they're described behaviorally here in this podcast, along with a bit of vocalization as background sound, the Florida and our Western (now California) birds are clearly all Scrub Jays.  There's a modest but interesting body of research on them and they're willing to develop a relationship with people, though it seems to be based totally on food acquisition.  :)

The Dutch startup Crowded Cities is recruiting crows to help clean cigarette butts from cities.
Tom Lee's insight:
Here's a chance to read about crows and expand your Dutch vocabulary at the same time.  I took four years of German in high school and college a very long time ago; it's interesting to see how many words I can recognize that are the same or very similar when reading articles such as this one.  I had forgotten about this actual story since learning of it a while back.

Each of Doka's miniatures are hand sculpted, extremely detailed
Tom Lee's insight:
I'm stretching things a bit here with this scoop but there IS a raven in this nifty display of miniatures.  I really admire the work of such artists as this.  I'm unfamiliar with laughingsquid but used to enjoy guitarsquid until it disappeared unceremoniously. I have no idea what the cephalopod connection means in either of those names and clearly am not as hip as I used to be.
