BELLEVILLE, Ill. — A Southern Illinois University study shows that tillage methods may not affect corn and soybean yields in fields treated with a full fertility regimen.

A long-term fertility plot at the university’s Belleville Research Center compared corn and soybean yields using different tillage methods and fertilizer mixes. The preliminary result is that there is no yield difference among tillage methods.

OMAHA (DTN) -- For the first time in decades, fertilizer companies have been lining up to expand nitrogen production in North America. The combination of historically low prices for natural gas -- the key ingredient for nitrogen production -- plus high farmer demand for nitrogen and the allure of building plants close to where fertilizer is consumed, has brought many players, old and new, into that expansion queue.

 

Whether all those in line make it through the gate successfully is coming into question. While many fertilizer companies still tout plans to either renovate existing plants or build new ones, there are signs the North American nitrogen production building boom could end even before it starts.
