Writing is Acting

Writing is Acting | Copywriter's Den | Scoop.it

Writers can spend days, weeks holed up in a room, churning out words, not knowing if their work is any good—engaging, or just shallow “busy work.” Actors, on the other hand, have the benefit of the mirror, studying recordings of themselves, or the reaction of any sized audience to immediately know whether they’re being honest. In this regard, it’s better to be an actor than a writer. The instant feedback—communicating with the energy your spoken words, movements, and choices are creating—improve a craft faster than being confined

How to Resist the Temptation to
Lie and Cheat Your Way to the Top

How to Resist the Temptation to <br/>Lie and Cheat Your Way to the Top | Copywriter's Den | Scoop.it

I’ve been duped.

A few weeks ago, I bought Jonah Lehrer’s new book, Imagine: How Creativity Works, after hearing rave reviews from several friends and respected bloggers.

Imagine was an easy book to love.

Jonah Lehrer has a wonderfully engaging writing style, and I enjoyed his anecdotes, examples, and advice on how to use the “science of creativity” to cultivate more creative and inspired work.

The Best Damn Copywriting Advice I’ve Found

The Best Damn Copywriting Advice I’ve Found | Copywriter's Den | Scoop.it

Copywriting is not writing, copywriting is assembling.

Great copywriters collect the varied parts of their research and assemble those parts into a true story that resonates with the particular worldview of an audience. Then that story is tested, tweaked, and deployed again. A story that enters the conversation an audience is already having, can be a story that wins.

6 Content Marketing Strategies Learned from The Hobbit

6 Content Marketing Strategies Learned from The Hobbit | Copywriter's Den | Scoop.it

As unbelievable as it sounds, it all started with a blank piece of paper, a moment of sudden inspiration, and one sentence jotted down onto that paper.

It all happened one day in the early 1930s.

At this point in time, a little-known Oxford professor was in the middle of creating School Certificate papers when he came across the blank piece of paper and was hit with inspiration. Little did he know that that one sentence would change his life, and the literary world, forever.

What was the sentence? “In a hole in the ground there lived a hobbit.”

Copywriting is Interface Design

Every letter matters

Copywriting is interface design. Great interfaces are written. If you think every pixel, every icon, every typeface matters, then you also need to believe every letter matters. When you're writing your interface, always put yourself in the shoes of the person who's reading your interface. What do they need to know? How you can explain it succinctly and clearly?

Two Lists You Should Look at Every Morning

Two Lists You Should Look at Every Morning | Copywriter's Den | Scoop.it

I was late for my meeting with the CEO of a technology company and I was emailing him from my iPhone as I walked onto the elevator in his company's office building. I stayed focused on the screen as I rode to the sixth floor. I was still typing with my thumbs when the elevator doors opened and I walked out without looking up. Then I heard a voice behind me, "Wrong floor." I looked back at the man who was holding the door open for me to get back in; it was the CEO, a big smile on his face. He had been in the elevator with me the whole time. "Busted," he said.

The 5 Most Persuasive Words in the English Language

The 5 Most Persuasive Words in the English Language | Copywriter's Den | Scoop.it

When it comes to assembling persuasive copy, like any other construction job, you need to rely on your skills, experience, and toolbox.

The toolbox of the writer is filled with words.

In defining what I believe is a critical element of crafting effective copy, I’ll make my case by amending the famous quote from Animal Farm: “All words are equal, but some words are more equal than others.”

And there are certain power words that hold more sway over our decision making process than others. You might be surprised to find that these “power words” don’t seem … well, all that powerful.
