Hierarchical vs Networked learning - NixonMcInnes | Anna Carlson

Hierarchical vs Networked learning - NixonMcInnes | Anna Carlson | cop | Scoop.it

"I was thinking yesterday about the behaviour you sometimes see in organisations of a reticence or a fear of asking for help. When trying to suppose why this might be it struck me that it might have something to do with a style of learning that is systematic within that organisation or a particular career. My hypothesis is this: some careers or companies operate a hierarchical learning model."

A plea for networked learning from the corporate side, from a company that labels itself as social business pioneers. This is the argument, at least my rendition of it: in a hierarchically layered organisation, learning is restricted to within the layers; in a networked organisation you learn from and with people from all over the company. Makes perfect sense for professionals needing to educate themselves continuously. In fact, why not recruit people from outside the company as well, as in open innovation?. Makes perfect sense from a business perspective, at least if you want to make sure your business is able to evolve through the expanding knowledge command of your employees (@pbsloep)

Yes, why not recruit people from outside the company as well, as in open innovation? There are many challenges well laden in a hierarchically layered organisation. These relate to questions:1. How are decisions made? 2. Who are holding the powers in directing the organisation? Are these the directors? 3. What is expected from the top management? 4. Are networked organization compatible with the vision and mission of a hierarchical organisation?
