High Fidelity Uses SMI HMD Eye Tracking to Create Life-like VR Avatars | cool stuff from research | Scoop.it
SAN FRANCISCO and TELTOW, Germany, September 29, 2015 /PRNewswire/ --

Open source VR network adds real eye movements...
Amy Cross's insight:

"Digital presences, e.g. through avatars in social VR, have to be life-like. Real-time and realistic animation of the behavior that contains the critical cues for life-like experiences is key to achieve the optimal impression. Correct gaze direction is one critical factor that plays a major role in social interaction. SMI's eye tracking provides this cue accurately, robust and in real-time. Eye tracking inside the Oculus Rift records where exactly in the virtual scene a user is looking and enables people to make eye contact with another avatar in a virtual space."

The Man Who Created Second Life Thinks We Can Make an Earth-Sized Virtual World - Facts So Romantic - Nautilus

The Man Who Created Second Life Thinks We Can Make an Earth-Sized Virtual World - Facts So Romantic - Nautilus | cool stuff from research | Scoop.it
Over 10 years ago, a digital experiment called Second Life launched, and excitement surged about the idea of interacting in online…
Amy Cross's insight:

"Virtual worlds close cultural gaps really quickly. We saw that a lot on Second Life. There were innumerable cases of people from cultures or backgrounds where they wouldn’t traditionally get along, getting along just fine in Second Life, and even then meeting each other in the real world and crossing that gap. I think that’s extremely powerful. The greatest differences between any two humans will be diminished and will continue to be diminished as we connect ourselves with these systems."

Definitely one of the more powerful effects of virtual technology is in the understanding that we get of other cultures and not through some picture window provided by the media or government. We get to know one another...person to person. Incredibly powerful.
