Daily safety inspections must become a ritual, not just a requirement.

Billy M Schmidt's insight:

Our safety gear and equipment are our tools to do the demanding work that we do: save lives and protect property. They are also our lifelines. The coats, pants, boots, gloves, hood, and helmet we wear protect us from the elements. Our SCBA provides the air we need to do the work and get out, and our radios connect us to the outside for information and when we need help. Why wouldn't we know everything about them, every day? Daily safety inspections must become a ritual, not just a requirement. Read here from NearMissMatters about the importance of inspecting your lineline tools every day.

Seven Strategies for Simplifying Your Organization

Seven Strategies for Simplifying Your Organization | Controlling Chaos | Scoop.it
The Catch-22 of organizational complexity is that most managers don't have the time to fix it.
Billy M Schmidt's insight:

Organizational complexity hinders productivity and damages morale. Conquering it is an enormous challenge. Simple, achievable strategies are required to address complexity. Apply these 7 steps from Ron Ashkenas’ HBR Blog to “simplify your organization.”

1.      Clear the underbrush. Get rid of stupid rules and low-value activities.

2.      Take an outside-in perspective. Clarify what your customers (both inside and outside) really want and what you can do to make it happen.

3.      Prioritize, prioritize, prioritize. What’s really important, get rid of what’s not, and continue reassessing and prioritizing.

4.      Take the shortest path from here to there. Once you’re clear that you’re working on the right things, get rid of the extra steps in the core process. Simplify!

5.      Stop being so nice. In other words, “speak up!” Hesitating to challenge the status quo only adds to the complexity. Be willing to have difficult conversations.

6.      Reduce levels and increase spans. Remove the numerous layers of management that leads to micromanaging (don’t create zombies!). Increase span of control by pushing responsibility and accountability out to the farthest points, where the real action is.

7.      Don’t let the weeds grow back. Weeds always try to creep back in. Keep the complexity “weed” out of your garden by remaining aware and repeating the first 6 strategies over and over again.

What are you doing to address complexity in your organization? Why are you doing it? And, where do you fit in?

Why Organizations Are So Afraid to Simplify | Controlling Chaos | Scoop.it
We may want to hit the "off" button on costly and complex activities, but we're wired to do the opposite.
Billy M Schmidt's insight:

Simplify! Especially the "zombie projects," those activities that are seemingly killed or deprioritized but somehow keep going because managers just don't want to let go.

The Dysfunctionally Connected Workplace Problem--And How To Fix It

The Dysfunctionally Connected Workplace Problem--And How To Fix It | Controlling Chaos | Scoop.it
Thanks to technology connecting has never been easier. But in a new study more than 80 of employees say their boss doesnt listen well.
Billy M Schmidt's insight:

You would think with all of the technology designed to enhance and simplify our tasks and synergize our organizations, we would be safer and more effective. Why do many fire departments continue to stumble through a communication mine field? Because it’s not about the gadget or software program (technology), it’s about real people creating connections (having conversations) to avoid a dysfunctional workplace. Use technology as a tool to help, but make time to meet with your people.
