Magnify's  "Digital Lifestyle" research shows that it's becoming more difficult for so-called professional web users to:


**cope with the stream of communication and


**to distinguish essential information from less important information.


A massive tidal wave in figures


**64% of the participants said that the information they receive had increased over 50% in comparison to the previous year


**Nearly 73% of the respondents described the information overload with superlative terms souch as a "roaring river" or a massive tital wave


It is simply becoming more difficult for people to filter information. And it's very important to realize that this is not caused by technology only, and that it will not be solved by technology.


**In their interactions with consumers and customers, companies have a responsibility to make it as easy and valuable as possible for people.


Here are some takeaways:


**Simplify your cross-channel messaging: improve and personalize your communication


**Marketers must ensure that their messages are targeted and synchronized.


**They should avoid overlapping communication and marketing fatigue. Read white paper 


**They should also let people choose their own communication channels more.


**Provide alternatives, because people will increasingly search for them in their quest for coping with information.

Does a brand’s social presence impact your purchase?

An Infographic published by Mr. Youth  - http://bit.ly/zgjXLd , a word of mouth marketing firm, polled 4500 adults to uncover the impact of social media on purchases.

 

They discovered that social media not only influences brand reputation and PR, but often can lead directly to a sale.

Over 90% of respondents either received or made recommendations to friends and families on Facebook. 65% of these social recommendations directly led to a purchase.

On top of that, 80% of those who received a response to a social media post by a brand made a purchase as a result of that interaction.

 

With numbers as striking you’d think businesses would be quick to comprehend. Yet according to the study, brands only respond to half of their social media posts, divided almost equally between Facebook and Twitter.

I posted this piece a few weeks ago and thought I'd do it again today because it's definitely something to watch in 2012.


I was on a tweet chat last night with the people from Kred and from what I heard, these people really are going to play a very important role in  reputation measurement. They seem to be transparent, willing to answer questions and respect the fact that we want to know how they come up with our scores.  They have a completely different system from their competitor.


Great interview by my friend, Robert Dempsey!


Robert Dempsey of Dempsey Marketing interviewed Andrew Grill, CEO of PeopleBrowsr, the developers of Kred.


Measuring online influence seems to be pretty hot in the marketing world these days.


The interview is split into 2 Youtube videos and will take 37 minutes of your time to watch them both, but


**I can assure you that if you have an interest in Influence Metrics, your time will be very well spent!


Here's a synopsis:


PeopleBrowsr pays Twitter for their Firehose.


For better or worse, this means that they have access to EVERY Tweet dating back to 2008 – a total of 55Bn (from approx. 100m @names) at the time of the interview, raising by approximately 1 billion each week, or 10,000 a second.


Each of us can imagine some possible negative ramifications for Twitter selling our Tweets to whoever pays the fee,


**but this particular project is all about helping people and businesses.


Grill sets up his thoughts on Influence by relating the difference between him being at a Networking event and traditional

advertising.


He would scope the crowd looking for people who look interesting, stand near them and listen for a while, finally interjecting himself into the conversation when he feels he can add something.


This, contrasting with the traditional method of advertising: going into a crowd with a megaphone!


Kred currently has two measurements:


Influence score by local community, It will create communities based around locale and sphere of influence.


He defines Influence as changing people’s minds or getting them to take an action.


Outreach score: This shows your generosity of sharing and thanking people for their tweets or recommendations


People will be able to go back any number of days to see tweets of people who interest them.


Kred will train people, not necessarily in how to raise their scores, bu]t in how to make use of what their numbers are telling them.


**Another aspect of Kred is that people can be awarded points for ‘offline influence’, such as awards they may have received



**Grill admits that it will be a couple of years before scoring platforms are able to bring people everything they might wish to see, but feels that we are on the right path.

It has to be the work of everybody which means that everyone needs to understand what it is they must do and why. This requires that you make social media marketing training part of your internal processes.

 

4. Create a conversation: Stop thinking about social media marketing as a new format of the traditional broadcast platform and see it for what it is, a stage whereupon you get the chance to foster lasting, relationships with your customers.

Social networks attempting to execute commerce on their sites might face some resistance, according to a new survey.

...

Despite the prevalence of social networks, consumers are still queasy about oversharing when it comes to credit card info.

That, at least, is the crux of an online survey executed by digital marketing firm Digitas and conducted by Harris Interactive in early January. Canvassing 2,247 would-be online shoppers, showed a slight majority weren’t ready to use Facebook et al. as a buying platform.

Predictably, older and richer consumers were even less apt to share such data.

 

Other factoids that emerged in the survey: People are spending almost as much time accessing social networks via their mobile devices as they do via their PCs. (Perhaps that’s not so astonishing, since other surveys have showed time on mobile devices eclipsing PC time.)

 

Another data point may be more surprising: Baby Boomers aged 45-54 — especially males — use their mobile device to access social networks more than 18-44 year-olds.

This great piece was written by Joe Pulizzi, founder of Content Marketing Institute 


There is no curation without original content. However, curators can expand the readership and help their niche find meaning and insight in the material as it relates to them. 


He says:


"So many organizations are getting caught up in content curation, but the real power of content marketing lies in original content creation."


Curation is more than a tactic, it is coming to forefront because


**people are overwhelmed with too much information.


If you're going to create content, I say mixing that with curated content might be a better way to go, again this depends on many factors,  but that's only my opinion.


Here are a few things that caught my attention:


Y0ur 2012 Checklist -


He says, yes, you can and should use content curation techniques, but this should be secondary.


I say, Curation is more than a technique and will go beyond a buzz word in 2012 as people learn new techniques.


He says:


"Focus on the true pain points of your customers and start planning content series around answering those pain points".


**I definitely agree but this can be accomplished by curation as well. It's not an either or, a curator can add more vital information, another perspective. provide resources or any number of things beyond the original article.


He says:


"Find the content curators in your industry and form relationships with them. They’ll help you spread the word about your great content".


I say:


I believe content creators will want to seek out good content curators  to curate their work.  I watched a six minute video yesterday, the title was "Is Your Content Good Enough To Be Curated"? Now that's a shift in thinking and a very interesting question to ponder, I say, stay tuned........


I think both are necessary in different proportions for different types of businesses.

Jeremiah Owyang Speaks at LeWeb “State of Social Business” Timely & Relevant

Jeremiah Owyang, A Partner at Altimeter Group shares at LeWeb, “State of Social Business”, important information you need to know if you're in social media or your business is embarking on a social media strategy.


He introduced the Social Business Hierarchy Needs Report at LeWeb in addition to his keynote address.


Jeremiah Owyang says that in 2012 the main focus will be on social, local and mobile data. In his talk, he says that social is so new, and companies aren't ready for it. They don't know what it is they need, therefore, they don't have the right talent in place to move forward.


If you're in one of these companies or servicing one of them, this presentation is something you won't want to miss.


My commentary:


As an entrepreneur, always being drawn to the "cutting edge" I can tell you from past experience, it's important to know that social business is still in its very early stages. Even if you have the latest and greatest widget or service, if people aren't ready you will be spinning your wheels.


Here's the most valuable lesson I can pass on to you having been a pioneer in Cable TV and the internet.


**Know where the marketplace is now and understand what you need to do now to get ready and operate successfully


**Is your product or service too early? Are there enough early adopters who know they need what you're offering or is there too much of an education process ahead before you see ROI


**Is there something you can do right NOW to fill a need and establish the right relionships to build your business accordingly while you wait for the market to evolve?


**If you're a company, this talk will help you to see what it is you need, what you're lacking,  and where you are in general with all of this, so you can put the right infrastructure in place and move in the right direction


"Make everyone in your business a diplomat, the rest is orchestration"

My commentary: In writing this post, Sue clearly demonstrates how to curate content effectively. She refers to Pawan Deshpande's post on Crafting the Perfect Content Curation Strategy and then takes it to another level. This is the kind of "context" that is valuable to your readers. 


Pawan points to three factors to consider in selection of the right topic:


*competitors' content strategies

*the volume of content on a subject

*audience interest


Sue says these three things are definitely important but some refinements are in order and she delivers the goods in this article. We may have read these things before but are we really taking it all in and applying it to our work as curators or for building our business?


Here's what particularly caught my attention:


**Think about what is compelling to your targets. What information do they need to do their jobs? Where are major changes underway that will affect their success?


****Look at your answers to those questions through the prism of your business, products or services.


****What is the storyline that connects your products or services to information needed to do their jobs

 

**or**


** the actions they will need to take to respond to important changes occurring in their business?


I love this one!


****Consider the issues associated with the topics under consideration.


**Will exploration of the issues provoke rich discussion


**A discerning perspective on controversial views will draw more attention and offer more opportunities for engagement.

YouTube announced changes to channels that feature a news feed integrated with Google+, Twitter, and Facebook for videos shared on other platforms.

Robert Dempsey of Dempsey Marketing interviewed Andrew Grill of PeopleBrowsr, the developers of Kred.


Measuring online influence seems to be pretty hot in the marketing world these days.


The interview is split into 2 Youtube videos and will take 37 minutes of your time to watch them both, but


**I can assure you that if you have an interest in Influence Metrics, your time will be very well spent!


Here's a synopsis:


PeopleBrowsr pays Twitter for their Firehose.


For better or worse, this means that they have access to EVERY Tweet dating back to 2008 – a total of 55Bn (from approx. 100m @names) at the time of the interview, raising by approximately 1 billion each week, or 10,000 a second.


Each of us can imagine some possible negative ramifications for Twitter selling our Tweets to whoever pays the fee,


**but this particular project is all about helping people and businesses.


Grill sets up his thoughts on Influence by relating the difference between him being at a Networking event and traditional

advertising.


He would scope the crowd looking for people who look interesting, stand near them and listen for a while, finally interjecting himself into the conversation when he feels he can add something.


This, contrasting with the traditional method of advertising: going into a crowd with a megaphone!


Kred currently has two measurements:


Influence score by local community, It will create communities based around locale and sphere of influence.


He defines Influence as changing people’s minds or getting them to take an action.


Outreach score: This shows your generosity of sharing and thanking people for their tweets or recommendations


People will be able to go back any number of days to see tweets of people who interest them.


Kred will train people, not necessarily in how to raise their scores, bu]t in how to make use of what their numbers are telling them.


**Another aspect of Kred is that people can be awarded points for ‘offline influence’, such as awards they may have received



**Grill admits that it will be a couple of years before scoring platforms are able to bring people everything they might wish to see, but feels that we are on the right path.
