"Content curation is the act of continually identifying, selecting and sharing the best and most relevant online content and other online resources (and by that I mean articles, blog posts, videos, photos, tools, tweets, or whatever) on a specific subject to match the needs of a specific audience.” – Ann Handley on TopRank blog

How to use content curation in your class

How to use content curation in your class | Content Curation-in-Education | Scoop.it

Instructors are information curators. At iTteachU (University of Alaska), this is how teachers are using content curation tools in the classroom to:

- create group activities;

- organize and disseminate new content as a sort of digital handout to students in online and flipped classrooms;

- collect and share professional reading materials with students;

- foster discussion about current events;

- encourage students to become both content creators and curators;

- connect to experts outside class and to the world knowledge base;

- critique information available on the web. teach students to curate social media;

- help students gain credibility and exposure;

- keep track of online research efforts;

- create reading lists;

- help students gain access to the ‘collective intelligence’ of the Internet;

What about you? Do you use curation tools for personal or pedagogical purposes? Let us know. Share your experience on curation with us.

An image is a powerful way to convey an idea, that’s why services like Pinterest are getting a lot of attention, which implies it is meaningful to its users.

Curation tools like Pinterest can be used as educational tools al all levels. In some colleges and universities Pinterest is brought into the classroom, or used to offer boards focused on academic resources at the school.

Online Universities lists a few of the schools that are leading the way using Pinterest as a great social media tool for higher education.

Curation and the Classroom: a Journey about Learning

Curation and the Classroom: a Journey about Learning | Content Curation-in-Education | Scoop.it

Curation has been on my mind a lot these holidays….actually, a lot longer than that really.

It’s been a long time since 2008 and first using Delicious with my students but it has been only 12 months since my introduction to Social Media as I now use it in my teaching and learning life. These two great presentations below have had me thinking about goals for the coming year.

I use and enjoy a variety of tools to curate the web and all for different purposes e.g Livebinders, Diigo, Symbaloo, the Edmodo library. As with all things , it’s the purpose and not the tool that drive the choice and of course my learning evolution.

Recently (better late than never) I have been exploring Scoop.it and how this tool can be used to create “textbooks” for classroom topics....

If used effectively, the iPad can be a powerful instrument for curating material. Tom Daccord demonstrated curative abilities of the iPad focusing on Note Taking."

Teaching Students to Become Curators of Ideas: The Curation Project

Teaching Students to Become Curators of Ideas: The Curation Project | Content Curation-in-Education | Scoop.it

"Over the last couple of years, I’ve come to think of my role as a teacher as that of a curator of ideas" says Corinne Weisgerber who teaches Social Media and Communication at St Edwards Unniversity in Austin, TX (if you haven't yet, check out her great prez here).

As she explained in this post, the Curation Project was about getting her students "to set up a network of online mentors using social media tools" and "to identify experts in their field and connect with them in order to build a personal learning network (PLN)."

The idea behing the PNL is to help them discover valuable information through social search that they wouldn't have discovered otherwise.

Interesting project and read.

And great work by the students who used various curation platforms for the project, including Storify and Scoop.it (links in the post)

A Look at Curation in Education

A Look at Curation in Education | Content Curation-in-Education | Scoop.it

Content curation to serve the needs of students and to foster professional exchange.

Start at the source and turn yourself into a top level curator or start your curation at a later stage in the funnel. Focus on two or three topics at max you want to curate, this way your followers will know what to expect when following you.

Your output is only as good as your input. Follow relevant sources you know you can trust to deliver valuable links and sources. Don’t just automatically re-share every single link. Your job is to evaluate whether the information is relevant to your following.
