The new learning experiences

Sue Gaardboe's curator insight, February 13, 2014 2:20 AM

If you can do it with paper why use a digital alternative? Because for some of students, it makes the difference between engagement and being switched off.  Of couse finding the activities that you just can't do with paper...that's the real power of a digital solution.

Jennifer Turner's curator insight, February 24, 2014 1:40 PM

Don't be afraid of social media when you can learn how to use it in your classroom.  This reasource is a great find for educators that may want to use social media but just do not know where to incorporate it.

Ontario College of Teachers Issues Advisory on the Use of Electronic Communication and Social Media

The advisory offers advice to teachers on how best to use electronic communication and social media with students. It encourages the use of social media as a teaching tool but cautions teachers to be careful when using sites like Facebook.

"In the current education milieu, e-communication and social media do and will continue to offer engaging and exciting teaching and learning experiences for students and teachers. Their use should be encouraged," says the Registrar. "We want to alert members to its potential risks and provide guidance for its responsible, professional use."

The teaching profession's ethical standards and standards of practice provide the foundation for the College's advice.

"Our advice to teachers is to keep ethical standards - care, trust, respect and integrity - in line of sight," says College Chair Liz Papadopoulos, OCT. "As teachers and educators, we model professionalism and responsibility for our students in both the real world and the virtual world."

It's the College's role as a professional regulator to provide advice to its members from time to time on emerging issues or in response to member questions on aspects of teaching that will continue to advance the profession and the public's confidence in it.

There are a couple of more I might add to the list, but it is still a great group of educators and thinkers. Others I would consider are John Dewey, Maria Montessori, Paulo Freire, and Alfred North Whitehead.  Even with those nine, the list is likely incomplete.

Steven Blomdale's curator insight, March 6, 2013 7:28 PM

Through the use of digital technologies students develop ICT capabilities through being exposed and adapting to new ways of doing things as technologies evolve (ACARA, 2013). Students learn to use ICT effectively and appropriately to access, create and communicate information and ideas, solve problems and work collaboratively, and in their lives beyond school.

The following list consist of applications addresses the learning needs of special needs students. These applications delevop social skills, speech to text, augmentative/alternative communication and  develop spatial reasoning skills. I have used some of these applications such as "My first ACC and Pictello" in previous practicums and they have engaged the student.

Social Media as a teaching tool: How to Tweet your students some knowledge - teachingwithipad.org | Contemporary issues in Education | Scoop.it

"As teachers, the pull of social media on your students attention will already be well known to you. The online world exerts a magnetic lure on the attention of young people today, offering community and information sharing, entertainment and gossip in ways that often pull students away from the blackboard. Understanding this dynamic, some educators are now bringing social media into the classroom in surprising ways. By working with something your students already enjoy and don’t, perhaps, associate with learning, there are opportunities for creative teaching, as well as making genuine connection with your students."

Aryi M L Peebles's curator insight, October 31, 2014 4:00 PM

Many parents have difficulties understanding what their children need and want.  Communication is an essential part to any interaction.  Children with special needs communicate differently and sometimes it impedes their ability to express what is frustrating them. There are thousands of tools out there that will give them what they need to express themselves. These apps help bridge the gap between the child and the parent. The apps help to lower stress of needing to always know what the child needs because the child now has a device that can communicate those needs for them!
