ctive Learning. The process of having students engage in some activity that forces them to reflect upon ideas and how they are using those ideas.Despite the evidence supporting its effectiveness, higher education (medical school, law shcool) rarely use this approach.

Alternatives To Homework: A Chart For Teachers

Alternatives To Homework: A Chart For Teachers | שיקולים פדגוגיים בבניית פעילויות מתוקשבות | Scoop.it

Beth Dichter's curator insight, June 17, 2013 10:50 PM

What if instead of giving homework to our students we asked them to come up with ideas? This chart provides a variety of alternative ways to look at homework. The post describes this as "Rather than simply a list of alternatives to homework, it instead contextualizes the need for work at home (or, “homework”). It does this by taking typical classroom situations–the introduction of new material, demonstrating a procedure, etc.), and offering alternatives to traditional homework assignments."

Consider asking your students what they would suggest doing instead of homework. What might you be able to add to these suggestions?

Nancy Jones's curator insight, June 19, 2013 9:40 AM

Love this! 21st century learning isn't as much about technology as it is thinking .allowing choices and options like this not only allow students choices but the opportunity for deeper thinking.

Laura Jane's curator insight, December 16, 2013 12:17 AM

I stole this from Jamie, and couldn't agree more! What a great [and practical] resource to have as we go into the final semester of our internships. This chart is chock full of ideas for creating more authentic and less monotonous homework for students. It focuses on reinforcing, and not memorizing.

These strategies could work for all grade levels, to different extents. This again addresses the quality vs quantity debate. One of my favorite examples is to reinforce a skill that has been taught. It suggests that, instead of asking students to solve 10 word probelms to prove that they know a skill, to have them work in groups to solve, model, and present one deeper thinking word probelm.

This allows students to work in harmony to formulate their ideas, and is a more productive approach to learning. Although some cognitive struggle is good, too much leads to frustration and defeat. Allowing students to work together helps them to actively participate in student-centered learning, and they can better understand what they've learned. I will definitely be printing this chart to put in my lesson planning binder.

[INFOGRAPHIC] An Overview of the Principles of Adult Learning

[INFOGRAPHIC] An Overview of the Principles of Adult Learning | שיקולים פדגוגיים בבניית פעילויות מתוקשבות | Scoop.it

By Nicole Legault

"After humming and hawing I decided that my third instructional design/learning themed infographic would be the Principles of Adult Learning. Now, I will be honest and say that while I knew a few principles (adults have experience, adults like control over their learning experiences, etc.) I was lacking in my overall knowledge in that area. Creating an infographic is a great cure to this. I need to research, read articles and gather the appropriate information. Then I have to boil it down to its most simple form and try to find visuals that represent what I am trying to communicate. Anyways, it’s a good learning process.

I

"thought I would jump online and quickly find the “list” of the 6 adult learning principles, or whatever. No such list exists. After much reading I have come to find out that there is no actual official consensus on what the principles of adult learning are. Many are generally agreed upon, but there is still much theoretical debate going on for each proposed principle.

"So here’s my disclaimer: there is no proven adult learning theory and the information in the infographic below is subject to much debate and differing opinions."

A great find from Larry Ferlazzo but what are the other five? A bit of research led me to a presentation by Rick Wormeli "Fair isn't always Equal: Assessment and Grading an a Differentiated Classroom" and sure enough the other five were located in the presentation. The are listed below:

* Assessing students in ways that do not accurately indicate students’ mastery (student responses are hindered by the assessment format)

* Grading on a curve

* Allowing Extra Credit

* Defining supposedly criterion-based grades in terms of norm-referenced descriptions (“above average,” “average”, etc.)

* Recording zeroes on the 100.0 scale for work not done

To check out the full presentation (and it is a long URL):

Benefits of Online, Face-to-Face Professional Development Similar, Study Finds | שיקולים פדגוגיים בבניית פעילויות מתוקשבות | Scoop.it

Researchers found similar effects on student learning and teacher behavior regardless of whether teachers took part in online or face-to-face professional development.

Fishman said that administrators and policymakers should see the findings as further evidence that online teacher professional development, while no silver bullet, can be a viable alternative to the traditional model.

"There's some hesitation on the part of teachers who think that online [professional development] is somehow less valuable to them because of a lack of personal connection," Fishman said.

"I think this study may make them a little more optimistic."

Teachers are really ready for this.   Receiving some of your PD via online means is less expensive and equalizes the participants.  For many teachers this what they have been waiting for.  I say let's grab a 'holt' of this and go.

Advent of Google means we must rethink our approach to education

Advent of Google means we must rethink our approach to education | שיקולים פדגוגיים בבניית פעילויות מתוקשבות | Scoop.it

Teaching in an environment where the internet and discussion are allowed in exams would be different. The ability to find things out quickly and accurately would become the predominant skill. The ability to discriminate between alternatives, then put facts together to solve problems would be critical. AThat's a skill that future employers would admire immensely.

Well as employers in the UK (and I suspect elsewhere) are complaining about students leaving school without the right skills, the schools should be looking at this seriously.

From the original article by Justin Reich and Beth Holland on MindShift: "What would a math class look like where students learn to compute, prove, derive, and intuit, as well as to discern and appreciate mathematical beauty?

What about a history class where students maintained a portfolio of beautiful artifacts and ideas from multiple periods?

How might efforts to curate benefit from the portability and ubiquity of mobile devices?

What would a “relevance portfolio” look like, where students catalog their daily encounters with ideas or experiences? What other kinds of portfolios could students create over the course of their academic career?"

If you are curious to get a glimpse at how tablets and their apps can be utilized to leverage curation for your classroom learning objectives, then this is definitely a good read.

You get a good introduction with some interesting historical facts about curation and about what it could be done with it in the real of education, and then you are provided with a good number of examples and tools that you can start to use right away.

Informative. Resourceful. 8/10
