St. Louis doesn't riot -- until violence and vandalism broke out in a suburban town after an unarmed teen was killed by police.

When we look at the larger issues involved in Ferguson, MO , the current model of justice is severely limited.  As Antonio French said, "This is about police brutality."  If we can focus on repairing the damage within the community and seeking resolution, true justice will be served.

A 48% reduction suspension, a drastic reductions of physical altercations - down from 263 to 31 at the time of the report and reduce defiance and disobedience provide hard evidence to support the use of Restorative Justice.  Deanne Kline, a school counselor at Hinkley High School states, "When teachers don't resolve the harm by doing Restorative Justice, then that conflict is always there and usually what'll happen is kids will just stay angry."

Michigan State University is using Restorative Justice to empower students to resolve conflicts on their own by asking:  What harm was caused? How do we make it right? How do we heal the harm?  "Hearing the person who has been victimized voice is more powerful than what any sanction or policy can do. ... Imagine how free a student feels when they are able to say to the person that did something to them, 'this is what you did and this is how I felt'. "

In one tough high school in Oakland, Calif., a restorative justice program has cut suspensions in half in just a year.

High rates of suspensions for African American students led to a collaborative program with the US Department of Education's Office for Civil Rights for a five-year voluntary resolution plan to reduce suspensions, expulsions, and the racial disparity.  "We have been working really hard to basically move away from a zero-tolerance strategy ... [and create a] culture that is about healing from harm and restoring a sense of relationship," said Tony Smith, OUSD superintendent
