Re-defining Corporate Behaviors and Norms Through More-Holistic Assessment

Re-defining Corporate Behaviors and Norms Through More-Holistic Assessment | Conetica | Scoop.it
An ESG assessment needs to go beyond risk avoidance, and take into account both business model and corporate strategy. Ultimately, ESG should move toward encouraging companies to adopt a shared value approach, carefully weighing how companies are providing value to society while also providing long-term returns to their investors. So how do we start to develop a more holistic view of ESG? I don’t have all the answers, but drawing on my experience, I propose that good ESG evaluations consider the following four practices:

Six or Seven Things Social Media Can Do For Democracy

Six or Seven Things Social Media Can Do For Democracy  | Conetica | Scoop.it

Social media doesn’t work the way we think it should. That’s the conclusion many people have come to in the wake of revelations about Cambridge Analytica’s mining of Facebook data to build political profiles and sway elections. Perhaps the concerns go further back, to the election of a US president in 2016 who seems fueled by social media, the more polarizing and divisive the better. Or perhaps it was Brexit that broke you. Or a gunman “self-investigating” the Comet Ping Pong pizza parlor, spurious accusations of crisis actors at Marjorie Stoneman Douglas and the amazingly inventive web of conspiracies the internet seems to engender. The cyberutopians have retreated, the creators of the modern internet are doing penance and we’re all social media critics now.

Does Collective Impact Really Make an Impact?

Does Collective Impact Really Make an Impact? | Conetica | Scoop.it

Collective impact tends to generate strong reactions. Mention it, and the person across from you will likely either extol its virtues or roll their eyes. Introduced in a 2011 SSIR article, the approach to social change came onto the scene and quickly became a buzzword and philanthropy darling. For some, it offered structure and clarity about how to operate complex, multi-sector social change processes that can otherwise feel opaque and intangible. For others, not so much.

Is good design elitist?

Is good design elitist? | Conetica | Scoop.it
This principle—that the more we invest concern in particularly meaningful objects, the less our world will be awash in disregarded trash—has often been used as an argument in favor of craftsmanship. People will gladly reuse expensive handmade cutlery again and again, whereas they don’t think twice before chucking out plastic forks and knives. In general, the more well-made an item is, the more care has gone into it, the more likely it is to persist. Ideally it will last a whole lifetime and even get handed down from one generation to the next.

Crowdsourcing as a Platform for Digital Labor Unions | Arora | International Journal of Communication

Crowdsourcing as a Platform for Digital Labor Unions | Arora | International Journal of Communication | Conetica | Scoop.it

Global complex supply chains have made it difficult to know the realities in factories. This structure obfuscates the networks, channels, and flows of communication between employers, workers, nongovernmental organizations and other vested intermediaries, creating a lack of transparency. Factories operate far from the brands themselves, often in developing countries where labor is cheap and regulations are weak. However, the emergence of social media and mobile technology has drawn the world closer together. Specifically, crowdsourcing is being used in an innovative way to gather feedback from outsourced laborers with access to digital platforms. This article examines how crowdsourcing platforms are used for both gathering and sharing information to foster accountability. We critically assess how these tools enable dialogue between brands and factory workers, making workers part of the greater conversation. We argue that although there are challenges in designing and implementing these new monitoring systems, these platforms can pave the path for new forms of unionization and corporate social responsibility beyond just rebranding.
