History FAQ | Carnegie Hall

History FAQ | Carnegie Hall | concert hall | Scoop.it

Carnegie Hall’s architect William Burnett Tuthill, an amateur cellist, studied European concert halls famous for their acoustics, and consulted with architect Dankmar Adler, of the Chicago firm Adler and Sullivan, a noted acoustical authority. Drawing on his findings (and in some cases his own intuition), he eliminated common theatrical features like heavy curtains, frescoed walls, and chandeliers that could impair good sound distribution. Carnegie Hall’s smooth interior, elliptical shape, slightly extended stage, and domed ceiling help project soft and loud tones alike to any location in the hall with equal clarity and richness.

John Sheetz's insight:

No list of concert halls is complete without Carnegie Hall. As one of the best concert halls in the United States, Carnegie Hall is also one of the United States oldest concert theaters that still has shows to this day.

Seen and Heard: Boston Symphony Hall | Boston Society of Architects

Seen and Heard: Boston Symphony Hall | Boston Society of Architects | concert hall | Scoop.it

I’ve been a music critic in Boston for 36 years and wouldn’t have it any other way. There may be more going on in New York; Los Angeles may have more glamour; Cleveland and Chicago have symphony orchestras of comparable quality to the Boston Symphony Orchestra; and San Francisco and even Houston have more opera. Still, I wouldn’t have it any other way. Partly because there are so many dedicated Boston musicians who play on such a consistently high level but also because at least three of Boston’s major concert venues make music such a pleasure to hear, and one of them — Symphony Hall — is widely regarded as one of the great concert halls in the world.

John Sheetz's insight:

Arguably with the best acoustics in the world, the Boston Symphony Hall is a world renowned concert hall.

Tobin Center's acoustics to rank with the best

Tobin Center's acoustics to rank with the best | concert hall | Scoop.it

SAN ANTONIO â€" The Tobin Center for the Performing Arts' main concert hall will have the ability to rank with the best acoustics venues in the country, experts with the consulting firm that helped guide the design of the center said Thursday. Several musicians of the San Antonio Symphony and YOSA alumni also sat in with the youth orchestra in a program that included music by Antonín Dvorák, Camille Saint-Saëns, Modest Mussorgsky and Charles-Marie Widor, with excerpts of Saint-Saen's Symphony No. 3 and Widor's Symphony No. 5 featuring the H-E-B Performance Hall's portable electronic organ. “The Science of Sound” event sponsored by Texas Public Radio was the first time the acoustics consultants could hear classical music from the Tobin Center's main stage with sound-absorbing humans in seats. Stage curtains were positioned to mimic the effect of people sitting in the upstairs mezzanine and balcony levels. The Tobin Center opens for its first formal event Sept. 4 featuring members of the San Antonio Symphony, Ballet San Antonio and Opera San Antonio. The Bexar County Performing Arts Center Foundation decided on the 1,759-seat capacity for the main concert hall when told that was about the optimal size of a hall for acoustics purposes. [...] that the hall is built, the acoustics can be adjusted by sound-absorbing curtains, the tilt of the forestage reflector near the orchestra shell and other stage features, they said.

John Sheetz's insight:

This is a modern event hall, built with acoustics in mind. This multipurpose event hall is the way of the future and was designed with every aspect of event production in mind.

The Walt Disney Concert Hall: An Acoustical Wonder
John Sheetz's insight:

With the Disney Concert Hall being both an engineering and acoustical marvel, this is without a doubt one of the coolest places to see a concert. The building itself is an architects dream, looking like it just came out of a futuristic movie. However, the sound is where it's at. This concert hall is known for having the best sound in Los Angeles, and it's home to the Los Angeles Philharmonic.

Musikvereinshaus Main Concert Hall Musikverein vienna

Musikvereinshaus Main Concert Hall Musikverein vienna | concert hall | Scoop.it
This building, in the centre of the city at number 12, Tuchlauben, had been taken over by the society in 1831 and contained the first real concert hall in Vienna.
John Sheetz's insight:

As a truly time honored concert hall, this Musikverein is one of the oldest concert halls that is still used. While the building itself is old, the acoustics of the building is anything but dated, having undergone several remodels to add in current technological advances.
