How Technology Is Changing Architecture | The Creators Project

How Technology Is Changing Architecture | The Creators Project | Computer Technology In Architecture | Scoop.it
Smartgeometry is a four day workshop that looks at how digital tools and computational design are affecting architecture.
Bryanna Geiger's insight:

Smartgeometry is an organization that shows how computer technology affects architecture.  Architecture is being changed by software and can respond to the environment.  Using Kinectmotion sensors, projectors, and custom software, an interactive design system was created.  The design was meant to respond the changes in the environment projecting a model of what the final product would look like.  Digital fabrication is used in electronics, robotics, sensing fabrication machines, and is being incorporated into architecture.  With technology architects are able to simulate and design the structure.  Computer technology allows the architect to be able to show the completed structure and to show the other possibilities or options to be changed or added to the structure.  This technology is able to apply changes to the structure to change the construction of the structure being created.  Technology allows the architect to have many more abilities and options when it come to the designing and creating of a structure.  In recent years new technology has increased the way we are able to view the final product before it is completed, see any potential problems in the design process, and alter the structure with computer technology changing architecture by creating more options for architects.

The goal of the article is to show how computer technology shows its effects on architecture. With the invention of Kinectmotion sensors, projectors and custom software the field has expanded quickly over time. This article proved how much technology plays in advancement of architecture. The field of design has many different limitations. But with the progress of technology architectural may reach new levels of creating a structure. The author thoroughly explained these options and gave many examples of the electronic advancement of architectural design. They outlined a very interesting take on how electronics will influence the field of architectural design.

Renzo Piano - Great Buildings Online

Renzo Piano - Great Buildings Online | Computer Technology In Architecture | Scoop.it
Renzo Piano, architect in the Great Buildings Online.
Bryanna Geiger's insight:

One of the greatest architects presently is Renzo Piano, an Italian architect born 1937 in Genoa, Italy.  He studied at Milan Politecnico from 1959 to 1964 and taught there until 1968.  Some of his notable buildings are The Shard, Beyeler Foundation, and The New York Times Building.  Renzo Piano received the American Institute of Architecture 2008 Gold Medal.  Technology helped him start creating designs and acted as the starting point for his architectural career.  He was a member of the "High-Tech Movement," and known for adapting technological designs and forms in order to allow for comfort and needs of the users.  Another award Renzo Piano received was the 1998 Pritzker Architecture Prize.  Thomas Howarth, FAIA, and Kira Gould, AIA, described his work as, "sculptural, beautiful, technically accomplished, and sustainable."  He is known for his beautiful works of architecture that incorporates technology into every aspect of the design.  Renzo Piano is one of the many present day architects who have been able to create buildings that are known for their beauty and structure with the use of technology.  Even recently the use of technology allows for people to pursue their interests and create new designs with available technology.

Computer Programs Help Users Bypass the Architect

Computer Programs Help Users Bypass the Architect | Computer Technology In Architecture | Scoop.it
Computer software programs have made it possible for homeowners to do the design work on renovations and new construction themselves.
Bryanna Geiger's insight:

Many new computer programs are helping people to better visualize and create designs for renovations or for buildings.  Software and programs include Chief Architect, FloorPlanner, Trimble SketchUp, and Sweet Home 3D.  These new technologies have allowed people to become more involved in the design process of buildings for renovations.  These new programs also are able to show building or designing of the building or house with furniture and the landscape.  These technologies help people to design or visualize a renovation without having to constantly consult an architect about the slightest changes greatly reducing the cost.  As much as technology has helped make the building and designing of building, houses, or renovations easier and quicker, technology can aid but not yet replace the architect.  Safety requirements may be overlooked, but many people have used this technology with no problems.  The evolution of architecture from only people specialized with architecture, but is now extending to regular people utilizing new technology to create his or her own ideas with the designs they are able to create.  The styles of architecture have been changing as more people are able to take part in the design process ultimately changing architecture overall in recent years.

It is very interesting how technology has greatly influenced our lives. Technology continues to surprise us when new programs like the ones mentioned above are introduced. People always worry about the technicalities of building a house and now they do not have to worry as much. Technology has made our lives extremely easy and people take it for granted. I agree with the author’s opinion, technology is available for everyone and makes difficult tasks like building a house much easier. The physical architect can never be replaced, but technology has greatly helped the consumer have a larger influence on the house they are building.

Bryanna Geiger's insight:

A study of CAD users and users of other technologies was meant to show how interior designers using the technology that is becoming available has increased.  This study demonstrates that employers' expectations of architects have increased by expecting them to be able to efficiently use CAD programs and other programs that are available.  Not only should architects know how to utilize these programs, but also have knowledge of other various programs.  The rising expectations that people have for proficiency in computer technology is increasing.  The use of computer technology in architecture and interior design allows for the project to be completed quicker and more efficiently. The study shows that employers expect the architects to have great skills regarding computer technology. The expectations of computer skills have greatly increased in recent years.  Having a certain level of understanding of general computer technology is important in present day architecture as it becomes more widely used being that it is easier to present ideas and complete projects.  More people are using computer technology in everyday life, becoming an especially prominent skill for architects.  Computer technology is becoming more common in architecture and shows the advances in computer technology in recent years through architecture.

How Has Technology Affected Architecture

How Has Technology Affected Architecture | Computer Technology In Architecture | Scoop.it
Bryanna Geiger's insight:

CAD, Computer Aided Drafting, is a useful tool that is commonly used by architects as well as by engineers, designers, and drafters.  Other software similar is computer-aided engineering or manufacturing, and photorealistic rendering.  CAD helps to create a drawing and display the design in 2D and 3D.  CAD helps to more accurately display the end result to a client and it shortens the time it takes to finish a project.  CAD helps to design the floor plan, other floors including elevation, sides of the building, all the floors, and the electrical plan creating a 3D model to scale.  According to the United States Department of Labor in 2010 in the United States there are 113,700 architects, 24% self employed working more than fifty hours a week.  CAD helps architects to best display their designs.  The first CAD product was Sketchpad which developed from the original 2D view to a 3D model.  Technology evolved from just the floor plan to include the electrical and elevation plan.  CAD along with many other programs and software have evolved into more complex technology for more detailed designs and quicker ways to develop a design.  In turn architecture has evolved into more complicated structures.
