Installation work to fill two paddocks in a Somerset village with "community-owned" solar panels is almost complete.

The £1.1m project to develop two micro-generation sites on farmland in Wedmore has taken less than a year to come to life.

Wedmore Community Power Co-operative said the 4,000 panels should be feeding power into the grid within a month.

Rural Community Energy Fund | WRAP UK

The Rural Community Energy Fund (RCEF) supports rural communities in England to develop renewable energy projects which provide economic and social benefits to the community.

 

The fund provides up to approximately £150,000 of funding for development work to help projects become investment ready

ResPublica | The Community Renewables Economy: Starting up, scaling up and spinning out

The latest publication from ResPublica reveals that community owned energy could grow 89 times its current size if the right national and local policies are put in place. In Germany, community energy accounts for 46% of all energy produced from renewables. In the UK this figure stands at just 0.3%.
