Ramanujan Affair: Why secular universities succumb to rightwing bullying

Ramanujan Affair: Why secular universities succumb to rightwing bullying | Communalism in India | Scoop.it

"The recent decision of Delhi University’s academic council to remove A K Ramanujan’s essay “Three Hundred Ramayanas” from its undergraduate syllabi has done violence to the university’s integrity and undermined the independence and autonomy of its academic life. Rather than stand by its own faculty, the university has pandered to right-wing violence. This is a dangerous precedent." (EPW, 12 November 2011).

Left, Congress should join hands against communalism: Jairam

Left, Congress should join hands against communalism: Jairam | Communalism in India | Scoop.it
Congress leader Jairam Ramesh has said that Left parties and the Congress should unite in the fight against communalism.
Subhash Rai's insight:

The Congress leader is not off the mark when he sees a need for Left and Congress unity to fight communalism. But the rise of communalism is not only a phenomenon that started with the rise of the Sangh Parivar with no historic context; it has very much to do with the rise of neo-liberalism. Both the BJP and the Congress have been foster parents of it. So how would Mr Jairam Ramesh change that? Is there a concerted effort within the Congress to address this duplicity? Not likely, given the way the party cooperated with the BJP on the Insurance Bill. But these are questions that need to be answered before any "alliance" can realistically work.

Electing Narendra Modi means encouraging capitalism and communalism

Electing Narendra Modi means encouraging capitalism and communalism | Communalism in India | Scoop.it
While capitalism as a danger might not be a rallying option, surely, the Left has to mobilise people on an anti-communalism platform. The problems, or shall we say, it's inability, to do so is dangerous for the country. An anti-Congress and anti-BJP front does seem dubious when in includes people like Navin Patnaik or even Nitish Kumar, on the very basis that Karat employees to mock Mamata Banerjee's rightward tilt.

The Jamia Teachers' Solidarity Association has released a report Framed, Damned, Acquitted: Dossiers of a ‘Very’ Special Cell. Shivam Vij has posted the preface of the report in Kafila.org. Some points from the preface:

* The report says that those arrested were accused of being operatives and agents of various terrorist organizations (Al Badr, HUJI, Lashkar)
* charged with the most heinous of crimes: sedition; war against the state; criminal conspiracy, planning and causing bomb blasts; training of terrorists; collection of arms, ammunition and explosives and the transfer of funds for terrorist activities
* the penalty demanded was the most severe: in most cases, life sentence or the death penalty.

According to the report, "between 1992 and 2012 a large number of those arrested were acquitted of all charges by the courts."

Beef Festival at Osmania

'The “beef festival” organised by some dalit and left student groups in Osmania University of Hyderabad has been, however, quite an unprecedented affair. This is perhaps the first time that an organised voice has been raised in favour of eating beef. What is striking is that most political formations did not know how to react to this “festival”. The secular formations, which do not want dietary restrictions imposed by law, seem to be divided, largely between those who have condemned this event for stirring up communal and caste tensions over a “trivial” issue and those who have looked on in indifference at this “spectacle”. Outside of the networks of dalit activism there do not seem to be many takers for what these groups call a movement against “Food Fascism”.'

Church pastor detained for 'illegal conversion' of school kids

A quick search revealed there is no Hebron Church of either mainstream strains of the Christianity. This church could be, and this is purely a guess, one of the new wave ones.

Traditional churchs have to work towards diminishing the "influence" of these new-age messiahs.

40 acquitted in Goa communal riots case for lack of evidence

Acquitting the accused, Justice Vikaya Pol said that the prosecution had failed to prove case against the accused, including the individual role played by them. The judge also observed that merely becoming a part of the assembly does not establish their crime.

“The prosecution could not prove, beyond reasonable doubt, the act or commission on the part of the accused, which would make him a member of the unlawful assembly,” the judge ruled.

Rushdie videochat called off to ‘save our children, everyone’

Rushdie videochat called off to ‘save our children, everyone’ | Communalism in India | Scoop.it

It is  nothing new for India's grand old party -- soft communalism, I mean. Minor infractions such as dumping principles, read secularism in this case, for potential electoral gains, has in the past wounded not only the country, but also the Congress party itself. The past week has seen a display in the very same kind of janus-faced politics.

It is not unusual for lesser mortals like ex-maharaja's to be concerned more about health and hearth of self and kin. What is more obvious is that the new prince will also not shy away from plumbing the depths to secure his place in the politics of the cow-belt. Rushdie was no favourite of his father too, afterall. The ones left out in the equation are the majority. The same majority that has firmly rejected the machinations of the Hindutva forces has to defeat the cynical politics that currently is in the mood to appease Muslim fundamentalism.

Subhash Rai's insight:

The emboldening of communal forces in recent years ranges from these sort of activities to the rape of an elderly nun. The reasons are plain to see: the response of the state, being a crucial factor. At best the state has responded  in a rather tardy manner or has looked the other way.

Cong corporator accuses Hindutva activists of molesting her

Cong corporator accuses Hindutva activists of molesting her | Communalism in India | Scoop.it
A mob of around 30 suspected Hindu Jagarana Vedike activists allegedly sexually assaulted a woman member of Mangalore City Corporation when she was canvassing for the Congress party on Sunday.
Subhash Rai's insight:
The situation in the coastal districts of Karnataka has been deteriorating for some time now, decades really. Even the BJP government's chaotic rule did not prevent the consolidation of Hindutva extremists in the region. While the BJP's bigwigs jostled for plumb posts or were busy pillaging, the Sangh's foot-soldiers were nonchalantly trying to fashion Karnataka into Gujarat. If any proof is required that allowing them a national stage is dangerous look at Dakshina Kannada, if Gujarat 2002 is a fading memory.

Kaup: Miscreants hurl stones at Polipu mosque; glass panes of the minaret walls damaged

Kaup: Miscreants hurl stones at Polipu mosque; glass panes of the minaret walls damaged | Communalism in India | Scoop.it
Udupi, May 10, 2013 : In yet another incident aimed at disrupting communal harmony, this time in Kaup, some unidentified miscreants hurled stones at the Polipu mosque at Kaup in the early hours of May 10.
Subhash Rai's insight:

Just a day after discovering that the people of Dakshina Kannada and Udupi districts have electorally given them sound drubbing, some Hindutva elements seem to have thought it fit to display some bravado.

The Congress has been given a decisive mandate in both the districts. If the party understands the verdict right, which is a loud rejection of the politics of hate, it should be tough of such elements. Is the Congress up to the task? Let's watch how this case is dealt with to find out.
