Matthew's insight:

Dave Thomas was born on July 2, 1932 in Atlantic City, New Jersey. When he was six weeks old he was adopted. When Dave was only five years old his adopted mother died and over the next years his father moved all around the country looking for work. When Thomas was fifteen he was working at a restaurant in Fort Wayne called the Hobby House. At this time his father decided to move again but Dave decided to stay. So he dropped out of High School to work at this restaurant full time. In 1950 He volunteered for the Army and was sent to be a cook in the Korean War. After the war was over he returned to Fort Wayne to work at the Hobby House.

In the Mid 50's Colonel Sanders came to Fort Wayne to try to sell KFC franchises to the owners of the restaurant where Dave was working. Whil the Colonel was in Fort Wayne Dave worked with him on many different projects to help KFC become better and more recognizable. Dave was later sent to improve four restaurants in Ohio and he was so successful that he sold his shares back for $1.5 million.

Dave Thomas opened his first Wendys restaurant in Columbus, Ohio in November 1969. He names the restaurant after his 8 year old daughter Melinda Lou whos nickname is Wendy. From 1970 to 1982 the company took off opening franchises all around the nation. In 1982 Dave got out of the day to day operations. But in 1985 because he didn't like the way the company was headed he came back and took a more active role.

The Life of the Legend
Matthew's insight:

Both of these people had a parent die when they were five years old. Dave Thomas's mother died and the Colonels father died. They also both dropped out of school at a very young age. They were on their own working very hard at this young age. Both of these men had to work very hard at such a young age just survive. I think that this had  big impact on who they became and how successful they were. They also both joined the military at a young age. The biggest thing that made these two men successful was the fact that they were both very hard working.

Matthew's insight:

The stories of Dave Thomas and Colonel Sanders just show how much the times have changed. Neither of these men received a high school diploma but they were still able to create multi billion dollar businesses. I believe this wouldn't happen today because if someone tried to start something like this without a college degree no one would have take them seriously. Also their is much more knowledge people need to have today to negotiate the business world especially a multi million dollar business.

Matthew's insight:

Colonel Sander was born in Henryville, Indiana on September 9, 1890. He was the oldest of three children. In the summer of 1895 the Colonels father came home with a fever and died shortly after. Because of this his mother had to get a job at the factory and at 6 years old Colonel Sanders was responsibel for caring for his younger siblings. Over the next years Colonel started to master some of the local cooking techniques especially fried chicken. Sanders dropped out of school when he was 12 and because his new stepfather beat him he left home to live with his uncle. Over the next years he moved around doing all kinds of jobs until in 1930 he opened a service station in Corbin, Kentucky with a small area where guests could be served. A few years later he moved to a larger restaurnant across the street where he perfected cooking chicken in a pressure cooker.Over the next years he continued to expand and in 1952 he successfully franchised KFC.
