This article explored the differences between leadership style and gender roles in divsions I and II. At this level, transformational leadership was favored in all categories but effectiveness. The gender was not a factor as both male and female were viewed the same for the most part.

A study was conducted with 215 division III ADs about the satisfaction of there jobs. The results were most ADs were satisfied with their positions and did not want to move on the division I or II. The complaints they had were too much paperwork and not enough help.

As college athletics has turned into a multi-billion dollar business seemingly overnight, never before has there been a need for stronger leadership at the institutional level to manage huge staffs and budgets in the tens if not hundreds of millions.

College Athletics is not a regular business and an Athletic Director is not a CEO. Athletic Directors need to hold themselves and the entire department accountable, well striving to be the best they can be.

Transformational leaders are looked at as a double edged sword because they motivate and employees like them but are the employees more committed to the leader than the organization. It turns out that is often the case with tranformational leaders but in sports, with the constant changing of jobs, is it a detriment?

A study was done among division I ADs and an assistant/associate AD from each institution to see how the ADs thought of their actions compared to how their subordinates thought of them.  The behavior was looked at to see if that translated in how efficient the organization was as a whole. The subordinates did not think as high of the actions of the ADs and the organization as the ADs themselves did.

A survey was taken among 98 Division III Athletic Directors, both male and female, about preferred leadership styles. Transformational was chosen over transactional in every category but effectiveness and the gender of the athletic director did not determine the style of leadership chosen.
