At Spelman, Dropping Sports in Favor of Fitness

At Spelman, Dropping Sports in Favor of Fitness | College students and exercise | Scoop.it
Spelman’s highly unusual move to eliminate the athletic department comes at a time when few institutions seem to be able to resist the lure of intercollegiate sports.
Jane Claspy Nesmith's insight:

Spelman college in Georgia eliminated athletics (team sports that compete) and is now using that money to fund fitness activities for its students.

This would be a great story to include in mine--obviously fitness is important. But I don't think Coe would go for this.

Only 80 of Spelman's students were involved in sports.  I wonder what the  number and percentage is here at Coe.

Easing The Way To a Healthy Kids Diet

Easing The Way To a Healthy Kids Diet | College students and exercise | Scoop.it
It’s really great to know many parents are wanting to transition to a healthy kids diet instead of the typical meal plan many families have today. (Easing the way to a healthy kids diet.

This article talks about younger people, children, but it's still useful for college students  . . . .

A College Guide to Eating Healthy | Nerd Fitness

I just found this blog.  It's very fun.  It's more of a self-help approach, but he has links that might work for my feature story, give me more info.

I wonder if any Coe students follow this blogger.

It's self-help-y, but I really liked this particular post http://www.nerdfitness.com/blog/2012/07/26/priorities/

Alverno Alpha : Community Fitness Combats “Freshman 15″

This is the kind of story I DON'T really want to write:  a self-help story.  I think I'd rather do a news or feature, not a how-to story.  Nothing against the self-help story, but I find they sometimes sound either too scolding, or too chipper.

Instead, I'd like to do a feature on what Coe is offering in terms of fitness, how college students respond to it, how/when they fit fitness into their lives, etc.

Everyone's heard warnings about the “Freshman 15,” but is it true that many college students pack on 15 pounds during their first year at school? When starting college there are many temptations that a person has to try to ...

Vigorous Exercise Linked With Better Grades

Vigorous Exercise Linked With Better Grades | College students and exercise | Scoop.it

Useful, very up-to-date story about some research linking good grades with physical fitness.  Might use this as a springboard to ask questions of my human sources (college students). Might also ask Coe student services and fitness people whether they've heard this.

College students who want to boost their grades can start by boosting their level of exercise, new research suggests.

The Supreme Court Just Admitted It’s Going to Rule in Favor of Marriage Equality

The Supreme Court Just Admitted It’s Going to Rule in Favor of Marriage Equality | College students and exercise | Scoop.it
Early Monday morning, the Supreme Court refused to stay a federal judge’s order invalidating Alabama’s ban on same-sex marriage. In doing so, the justices immediately set up a constitutional crisis between the state’s lawless chief justice and the federal judiciary. They also effectively admitted what court-watchers have suspected for months: The court is preparing to rule in favor of nationwide marriage equality at the end of this term.

Jane Claspy Nesmith's insight:

This story helps people understand what happened when the Supreme Court ruled on Alabama's law.

Physical Activity for Everyone: Guidelines: Adults | DNPAO | CDC

Physical Activity for Everyone: Guidelines: Adults | DNPAO | CDC | College students and exercise | Scoop.it

This is a chart from the CDC that gives suggested amounts of physical activity for adults.  Love the credibility of this site (CDC!).

Good background to include in a story about fitness.  Basic info is that adults (including college students need a combination of aerobic (75-150 minutes per week)  and strengthening activity (2 or more days per week).

University pulls fitness and swimming requirements for undergrads ...

(It was very difficult to find out WHICH Chicago-area university this news site was for!  Turns out it's U of Chicago.)

The story is the opposite of the earlier story about the S.Carolina college.  At UChicago, they are getting rid of a fitness requirement.  UChicago students used to have to pass a swimming test in order to graduate. Now they don't have to.

The first comment was from an alum who vows to stop sending donations because of this.

Are the changes due to budget problems?  The story suggests it's not, but because the college is trying "another direction."

Does Coe have a PE requirement?

Here's the summary:

Administrators have ended a decades-long practice of testing College students for fitness and swimming ability, while plans of a new vision for athletics is in the works.

F as in Fat 2011 Iowa Press Release

Iowa is the 20th most obese state in the nation says this story, which is a page linked to the "F as in Fat" story.

Not only that:  "The obesity rate in Iowa increased by 73 percent over the last 15 years," the article says.  That is not good, and I think it would be an important statistic to include, and a reason that young people should definitely be involved in fitness.

College requires fitness assessment for freshmen - USATODAY.com

College requires fitness assessment for freshmen - USATODAY.com | College students and exercise | Scoop.it

Fascinating story about a college's decision to make fitness part of the curriculum.  1st years must take a fitness assessment and sign up for physical activity.

This because S.Carolina has high levels of obesity.

Could Coe do this? Would it? I wonder what Iowa's obesity statistics are.

Coker College is requiring all freshmen to take a mandatory fitness assessment as South Carolina moves up on the Fattest States list.
