New challenges in Cuba with the development of more autonomous cooperatives

New challenges in Cuba with the development of more autonomous cooperatives | Collaborator Participation and Shared Ownership | Scoop.it

Cooperatives are now being formed in Cuba in the service sector, which includes transportation, plus some productive sectors such as fishing and construction. Months ago self-employed workers were already allowed to create small private companies, that bear high taxes and high risks. Now they face a fierce competition from cooperatives that can re-use infrastructure from previously state-owned business. And that might attract financing from families abroad, who can easily afford to invest in cash. One of the survival tips for self-employed entrepreneurs is to gather colleagues and create a cooperative themselves. Read more (in English) on this emerging economic experiment on the Havana Times website.

Jan Lagast's insight:

Although this Cuban blog post risks to put a communist stamp on this entire blog, I do recommend reading the article as it shows an interesting evolution -- you might call it a struggle -- from a single-party locked-in and isolated dictatorship to a more competitive economy.

Employee ownership perfect remedy againts unemployment (US)

Employee ownership perfect remedy againts unemployment (US) | Collaborator Participation and Shared Ownership | Scoop.it

The Employee Ownership Foundation and the Nantional Center for Eemployee Ownership (US) found that employee ownership averts a substantial amount of unemployment and saves the US government over $37 billion. Data from the 2010 General Social Survey shows that in 2010, for instance, 12.1% of all working adults in the private sector report having been laid off in the last year, compared to just 2.6% of those respondents who says they own stock in their company through some kind of company-sponsored employee ownership plan. This dramatic difference remains even after adjusting for different conditions faced by employee-owners and non-employee-owners.
