John Pemberton was the son of James and Martha Pemberton.  He was born near Rome, Georgia on July 8, 1831.  John Pemberton was a veteran of the Civil War and was wounded at the Battle of Columbus, Georgia.  His injury led him to an addiction of morphine.  He then searched for a cure for the addiction by experimenting with coca and coca wines.  Pemberton's experiments led to his first drink called "Pemberton's French Wine Coca."  This drink was advertised as a nerve tonic, stimulant and headache remedy.  It was advertised as a "pure, delightful deffusible stimulant. Pemberton was a physician and chemist and at the age of about fifty five he had developed Coca Cola.

Both entrepreneurs started off in the drug store business.  They were both pharmacists that came up with a refreshing drink that turned into the soft drink empire they are today.  The drinks they made were to relieve symptoms of upset stomach, headache, and to calm nerves.   The entrepreneurs did not stay with their businesses for their lives.  Both sold businesses to an outside source even though Bradham sold the company when it bankrupt.

Brandham wanted to make a soft drink free of narcotics so he experimented with many things.  His business took off, and he was selling stocks to investors.  The war  hit and the sugar crisis made Pepsi g0 bankrupt.  Brandham almost had no other option but to sell.  The company rose later under new management.

The factors that affected the entrepreneurs was they had easier access to distribute their soda.  The local soda fountain was a great way for them to distribute their beverages.  Back then their was a low barrier to enter unkike today's fast moving market.  Coca Cola and Pepsi have built up a customer base that is very loyal and makes it unforgiving to new soda entrepreneurs.

Caleb  Bradham was born on May 27, 1867 in Chinquapin, Duplin County, North Carolina.  Bradham became a pharmasist after graduating from the School of Pharmacy at the University of Maryland.  Before he attended the University of Maryland he went to the University of North Carolina, Chapel Hill.  He was going to become a doctor but his father had fallen into bankruptcy which forced him to pursue a different career.  He opened a pharmacy and experimented with beverages which led him to discover "Brad's drink."  Bradham was 31 years old when he developed this drink.  He had a thriving business until WWI when the price of sugar skyrocketed.  He went bankrupt shortly after because the sugarmarket crashed.  A wall street broker then bought the trademark and business.

John Pemberton invented his drink to help himself get off his morphine addiction.  This helped him make a delious drink that was marketed as a medicine.  He took a situation in his life and made a business from it.  In the following years he sold the rights to produce Coca Cola and it started to spread out.  He then declared that his son was the only one who could use the name Coca Cola for his drink.  The others had to use different names and failed.  Pemberton then sold his business.
