Lakyn Haro's insight:

Katherine Noel Brosnahan was born on December 24, 1962 in Kansas City, Missouri. She graduated from St. Teresa's Academy which was an all-girl Catholic high school after spending some time at Catholic prep school with her sister Rhetta. After attending the University of Kansas she then transfered to and graduated from Arizona State University, where she majored in journalism. At age 24 Spade worked in the accessories department of Mademoiselle in Manhattan which began her interest in accessories and clothing. Spade then married her co-worker Andy Spade at the age of 32. The newly married couple was then featured in a magazine as part of a photo story on couples and love. A year before Spade was married she and Joel Franklin launched "kate spade handbags" a New York-based design company. The company initially started off selling hand bags but has also extended into selling stationary, personal organizers, address books, shoes, beauty products, perfume, raincoats, pajamas, and eyewear.

Factors contributing to a successful business

http://smallbusiness.chron.com/factors-contribute-success-business-415.html

Lakyn Haro's insight:

Several factors contribute to the success of a business and how they all fit together is how the business ends up succeeding. The first thing needed for a successful business is to create a business plan which is essentially the guide on how the business will be run. Second is timing. Timing is important when starting up a business depending on what the customer trends are at that given time, and analyzing and predicting if those same trends will carry on into the future. Location of your business is a key factor in success. If the location of your business is somewhere unknown or hard to reach, the chances of the business succeeding are slim. If the location of the business is in a very well-known spot chances of succeeding are higher. And finally controlling the cost of your business. Cost control helps keep everything at ease when wanting a successful business.

Business success in the entrepreneur's era

Kate Spade and Lauren Conrad

Lakyn Haro's insight:

The key to having a successful business in the 90's was having great customer service. During that time many customers were seeking a much more personal appeal when shopping in different businesses. When the customer would recieve help on a connecting level, the customer was willing to return to that business again; however, when the customer was not satisfied with the way they were treated the business was likely to take a down turn. Business success also depended on timing. As technology was evolving, more people were willing to spend the extra dollar to get the latest gidget that was available. When Kate Spade began her business in the year of 1993, she was appealing to customers who wanted the look of classy, but affordable handbags which was a great hit.

Lauren Conrad created her business in the time period that is much like today. Conrad's key to success was very similar to the key factors listed in the scoop titled "Factors contributing to a successful business."
