Why Cities Hold the Solutions to Fighting Climate Change

Why Cities Hold the Solutions to Fighting Climate Change | Business & Climate Change | Scoop.it
Cities are the place where so much of the climate change solution lies, which is why mayors are making their voices heard at the Cancun climate summit. They are committed to finding sustainable solutions and keen to criticize national governments for not helping them to succeed by continuing, for example, to subsidize fossil fuels.

Cities around the world are committed to finding sustainable solutions to climate change and global warming through pollution controls and other means. The mayors of the cities are criticizing national governments for not helping them to succeed in reaching their environmental goals.

Cities are centres of industry and consumption but they are also where most solutions lie. They experiment and implement many programs and find out through trial and error what works and what doesn't.

The problems begin when cities and business agree on implementation of green measures but infrastructure or supports required from the next government level get stalled or never materialize at all.

I would be curious to know if Canada has any impressive green cities.

A new report by UNEP, in partnership with ICLEI, has surveyed low-carbon cities worldwide to identify the key factors underlying their success in scaling up energy efficiency and renewable energy in district energy, as well as in meeting targets for zero or low greenhouse gas emissions. Modern district energy systems emerged as a good practice approach for providing a local, affordable and low-carbon energy supply, and represented a significant opportunity for cities around the world to move towards climate-resilient, resource-efficient and low-carbon pathways. The report was launched on 25th February in Paris, France.
