This year marks the 800th anniversary of the Magna Carta, and today the four surviving copies of the 1215 document have been brought together for the first time in London.
Joanne Tucker's insight:

The Magna Carta is 800 years old and still is a cornerstone of British parliamentary democracy.  Although much has changed since it was first written, the Magna Carta was absolutely crucial in establishing the right to a fair trial for all.

Queen's Speech 2013: Bill-by-bill

Queen's Speech 2013: Bill-by-bill | Clickdocs UK Law | Scoop.it
The Queen's Speech sets out the government's legislative programme for the next year. Here is a guide to all the bills in it.
Joanne Tucker's insight:

The Immigration Bill will affect both landlords and employers. Employers are currently required to carry out checks to ensure that all employees are entitled to work in the UK but this bill looks set to increase the penalties for getting it wrong. Landlords will also be legally required to check the immigration status of tenants. Whether this is an additional burden or largely covers checks already carried out by landlords/letting agent as best practice is debatable.

Small businesses may benefit from the National Insurance Contributions Bill and the £2k NI allowance. Self-employed will probably be pleased with the proposal to exempt them from health and safety legislation in the Deregulation Bill.

Lasting Power of Attorney - GOV.UK

Lasting Power of Attorney - GOV.UK | Clickdocs UK Law | Scoop.it
Joanne Tucker's insight:

A Lasting Power of Attorney is a legal instrument used in England and Wales that lets you appoint someone to make decisions on your behalf.  They're normally used when someone is unable to make their own decisions e.g. dementia.

Unlike Ordinary Power of Attorney documents, a Lasting Power of Attorney is invoked once the Donor loses mental capacity and cannot (easily) be revoked.  Setting up a Lasting Power of Attorney is not to be undertaken lightly.

All the necessary forms are available freely from the Gov.uk website as well as some useful guides.

(In Scotland the equivalent legal instrument is called an Enduring Power of Attorney.)
