Math, Science, History: Games Break Boundaries Between Subjects | Classroom Management | Scoop.it
Game-based learning forces students to apply knowledge in a contextualized way, it creates an interdisciplinary learning experience where subject-specific knowledge is used in a context that requires diverse applications. The borders between disciplines become fuzzy and ambiguous.

Why Aren’t More Schools Using Free, Open Tools? | Classroom Management | Scoop.it
One school in Pennsylvania is using open-source tools wherever possible to keep students close to the code behind the machines they use. This stance is opposite to the very restrictive policies of many schools, but could allow students more freedom to explore what makes devices work.

Create a quiz in PowerPoint

Create a quiz in PowerPoint | Classroom Management | Scoop.it

Did you know that you can create a quiz in PowerPoint? You can create a simple quiz in PowerPoint using just hyperlinks. It’s simple because it doesn’t require any programming and you can’t grade it.

Students take the quiz in Slide Show view. When they choose the wrong answer, they go back to the question to try again. When they choose the right answer, they go to the next question.

Such an interesting blog about classroom management.  Often, teacher's think classroom management is about rules, rewards, and consequences; however, it's about building positive relationships.  It's about having power WITH kids, not power OVER kids.  I like this.  Getting students involved in managing the classroom makes them feel valued and respected.  Also, it is important to share our lives with our students by showing them our outside interests, sharing stories of when we were students, and to add photos of things and people that matter to us.  This helps students connect with us and see us, not just as a teacher, but as a person.  The second half of this blog is about connecting with our students.  I like the idea of having interest inventories so we know what our students care about; also, a suggestion box is an interesting idea.  It can give students the freedom to be honest.  This was a great blog to read; a good resource.

Beth Dichter's curator insight, March 1, 2015 8:33 AM

Where will technology make the biggest impact on education? This post shares nine areas, based on research, where the use of technology is making an impact.

What are the ten areas? Below is a list of the top five. Find additional information on each by clicking through to the post, as well as links to other resources.

1. Critical Thinking - In this area four kinds of thinking are discussed: Analogical, Expressive Experiential, and Problem Solving.

2. Mobile Learning

3. Access to Education

4. Continuous Feedback

5. Unlimited and Immediate Learning

Please note that the title on the post days there are ten areas, but number four is missing in the document (or there are only nine areas). I renumbered the areas above so that they are consecutive.

Matthew M.'s curator insight, March 4, 2015 12:32 AM

This post relates to the readings because it talks about the way critical thinking is important to acquiring knowledge and how technology affects our learning. One of the significant aims of education is to produce learners who are well informed, that is to say, learners should understand ideas that are important, useful, beautiful and powerful. Another is to create learners who have the appetite the appetite to think analytically and critically, to use what they know to enhance their own lives and also to contribute to their society, culture and civilization.
