Young Archaeologists’ Club Parthenon Sculptures (NOT Elgin Marbles!!!) Vote!

Young Archaeologists’ Club Parthenon Sculptures (NOT Elgin Marbles!!!) Vote! | Classical Greek Architecture | Scoop.it

British Charity, Young Archaeologists’ Club, a UK-wide club for young people aged up to 17 interested in archaeology has a voting page which asks:   " What do you think?

Do you think that the Parthenon Sculptures on display in the British Museum should be taken to Greece?:

Yes, send them to the New Acropolis Museum!

No, keep them at the British Museum!"

...but also writes...

"The Parthenon Sculptures are sometimes called the Elgin Marbles because they were brought to Britain by Lord Elgin. The sculptures come from the famous Parthenon temple, which is part of the Acropolis in Athens. The Ancient Greeks began building the temple in 447BC.

Around half of the sculptures were destroyed in ancient times, before Lord Elgin arrived at the Parthenon. Of the remaining sculptures, about 50% are now in the British Museum, where they have been on display since 1817. Most of the rest are in the New Acropolis Museum in Athens.

Some people want all of the remaining sculptures to be together in Athens - others believe that the British Museum collection should stay in London."

The YAC also suggest a link to the Intelligence Squared debate in which Stephen Fry supported and won - he believes the The Parthenon Sculptures should be sent back.

I believe it's a great gesture telling young people that the marbles should be called "The Parthenon Sculptures"

This video is great because the narrator goes over the different buildings of the Acropolis, not just the famous Parthenon, and what their functions were to the city of Athens. He also goes over the building history of the Parthenon and the several destructions and rebuildings of the Ancient buildings. It gives you the perspective of what the Acropolis looks like now in modern day society.
