Written in Greek, the above is a contract for the sale of a female ass between two citizens of Alexandria, dated 204 a.d., the animal being sold for 600 drachmae, 24- lines plus 4- line autograph attestation in capital letters signed by Apollonius (Oxy.P.1707). This comes from the vast hoard of papyri excavated by Oxford University in 1896-1907 at Oxyrhynchus, of the west of the Nile near the modern town of Behnesa, about 120 miles from Cairo. The town had been well-known in the early Christian period for its churches and monasteries. The excavations furnished some of the most important and celebrated papyri ever found.
