I use Evernote a lot and would make more use of penultimate if I had a decent stylus though the web clipper extensions for browsers are useful.

From the article: "As a consequence of the absence of the materials and occupations which generate real problems, the pupil’s problems are not his… A pupil has a problem, but it is the problem of meeting the requirements set by the teacher. His problem becomes that of finding out what the teacher wants."

This is one reason why Socratic Seminar is so important. Students generate their own "problems" (usually in the form of questions), and then seek evidence to answer those questions. Socratic Seminar is a perfect vehicle for the gradual release of responsibility, moving the action of learning from the teacher to the students.

Socratic Seminars

Socratic Seminars | ENL Resources | Scoop.it

Socratic Seminar Overview

The Socratic method of teaching is based on Socrates' theory that it is more important to enable students to think for themselves than to merely fill their heads with "right" answers. Therefore, he regularly engaged his pupils in dialogues by responding to their questions with questions, instead of answers. This process encourages divergent thinking rather than convergent thinking" (Adams).

"Socratic questioning recognizes that questions, not answers, are the driving force in thinking. Socratic seminars explore ideas, values, and issues drawn from readings or art works chosen for their richness. They also provide a forum to expand participants' familiarity with works drawn from many cultural sources. Leaders help participants to make sense of a text and of their own thinking by asking questions about reasoning, evidence, connections, examples, and other aspects of sound thinking. A good seminar is more devoted to making meaning than to mastering information. Seminars strengthen participants' learning by getting them actively engaged in rigorous critical thought. Practical activities are always followed by periods of reflection and discussion about what has been experienced. The goal here is to allow learners to create a community of inquiry for the purpose of making meaning cooperatively" (Raider).

ESL Teacher Training in 3D Virtual Worlds

ESL Teacher Training in 3D Virtual Worlds | ENL Resources | Scoop.it

Although language learning in 3D Virtual Worlds (VWs) has become a focus of recent research, little is known about the knowledge and skills teachers need to acquire to provide effective task-based instruction in 3D VWs and the type of teacher training that best prepares instructors for such an endeavor. This study employs a situated learning approach to teacher training and explores what online teaching skills emerge in the process of collaborative situated learning, how these skills develop, and whether collaborative situated learning is an effective method of training instructors to teach in 3D VWs.
